FIRST LURCHER

Hi all

 

After 26years of ferreting and hours of watching working lurchers on youtube, i have decided to get my first ever lurcher pup (well i decided to rescue him as he was going to be dumped as the large family of 8kids, 3dogs could not lookafter him I have had him for a week now and he is just coming upto 13wks old. Already he sits and lets me know when he needs to go outside.

 

However as this is my first lurcher i am after any advice / tips to get him being obedient & working to the best of his ability when he is ready.

 

I am after any advice on best foods etc / when to show him a rabbit skin etc etc and what age should i start breaking him into hunting???

 

Also i would like to know has having a lurcher had any effect on you lads aquiring land / permission??? as iv always heard hunters with lurchers have a bad reputation???????????

 

Can anyone recommend the best book to get????????

Cheers for that lads. I have thousands of acres i ferret and shoot on which i have proven my responsibility / trustworthyness over the years so I will be ok. But when seeking new permission,do you lads say you use a dog?? or just say you catch rabbits?? Why are we sometimes frowned upon?? is it because we hunt with dogs? or is it lurchers are associated with poachers??? Probably both lol

I"d like to think we dont have a bad name but in reallity we prob do.

When i ask 4 permission i approach the land owner dressed smartly and politely explain to him what i am looking for, if your up front and honest you shouldnt have a problem.

Dont just turn up in your rags wi a lurcher an a lamp asking if ya can go hunting wont go down well lol.

It sure was had a brilliant jack russell years back who was golden on marking buries, but unfortunatly not long enough in the leg she would of been cracking to work along side a lurcher god bless her

ask for a good book and you get reccomended a dvd, typical nowadays! if you want a book, the working lucher by jackie drakeford helped me no end. good luck mate

Couple of tips; go slowly and reward the positive!

 

Go slowly - it's never too early to start but just remember you're dealing with a young animal and it'll be a puppy from now till anything up to 18mths (though many mature way before then).

 

Reward the positive - A dog taught by punishing what you don't want is a lot harder work than a one taught by rewarding what you do want. I'm sure many good books and DVD's will expand on this but try and manufacture situations where the dog does what you want then you can praise it; retrieves down a corridor or narrow alley mean the dog has to come back toward you, whereas done in a wide open garden and the dog has scope to go off where-ever it wants... that kind of thing.
