td5 is heavier on fuel, parts are more expensive, BUT its newer so less tin worm.

don't go for an early td5, they weren't very good, after 2001 is ok i'm told

the td5 is easier on fuel than the tdi300, deending on hoe you drive it, the 300tdi is dead compared to the td5, which is a five cylinder,

parts are cheap on both so don't let that put you off, the head on the td5 is aluminuim so if you overheat it, its a new head simple as,

the 1999 td5 was crap anything after is ok, the main problem with the td5 is the fuel pump will go about 100 to 120 thousand miles...

the td5 is a more comfortable ride also, and better finsihed internally,

i drive the TD5 and my brother drives the 300tdi.... so i'm talking from experience..

snap.

I own a 1998 TD5, have done for nearly 4 years now.

Have had normal issues with it in that time, I had a 300Tdi and a D1 V8 before it, I'd say the TD5 is the better vehicle, easy to work on, no end of help available on forums if you join them and join in.

I used to be a bit obsessed looking after mine, and have done most of the major jobs to it, none were difficult, servicing even using LR parts is under £100.

Haven't touched mine for the last year, except an oil change and it went straight through the MOT this year no problems.

My brother bought a really nice condition 2000 W with around 100K on last year for £3 grand, they'd be cheaper now.

Personally if I was buying one I'd buy one without the extra bits, ACE, air suspension etc, less to go wrong.

Ive owned a 2003 model td5 disco for the last 2 years and love it! Only problem i had was that shortly after buying it i had to replace the fuel pressure regulator which is a common problem on td5's. Mine has no aircon or ACE which is how i wanted it (as already mentioned less to go wrong!) Max mpg on a run is around 30mpg.

I owned a diesel fourtrack before and even though it was a great shooting waggon the td5 is in a different league being a much smoother drive especially on long runs (turbo is a little laggy but im used to it)and also has much more room. Ive also found it to be excellent offroad even though only fitted with a set of Cooper ATR's..

A friend of the family who owns a garage does the servicing for a lot less than the 4x4 specialists up the road so its even cheaper to keep on the road.

for the dogs alone, its a 300 tdi all the way, if you pay 2k you will get a very nice example with around 100k and will last another 100k

you can fix its your self and to be fair if its not abused and is serviced its a steal,,, not only that but you can modify it cheaply and sell it for what you paid when the time comes,

its its for dogs and family, its a td5, but for the same qaulity in a td5 (sub 100k)you need to be looking at 5k.

then there is the fact you need to plug in every time you have a fault! the ACE, system, rear air suspension if it has it, head gaskets going, most have been cooked at some point, but the td5 is much larger in the boot and i find you do not need to have the rear seats down even when fully loaded with hounds

i miss my td5, but love my 300tdi! funny old world!

the real bargain is the td5 commercial, you can buy one cheaply, pay the commercial road tax and fit the standard rear seats,,

two things to look out for on older td5's

1,is the rear chassis, the chassis legs that go the very rear of the car can fill with water and can rust form the inside, you will see the chassis section look distorted, if so they are cattle trucked!

2,leaking sun roofs!!! this si a real pain, as soon as you get in feel just above the screen below the sun visor, if its wet,, its a head lining out and re-sealing job!! not that hard but normally you end up damaging the head lining.

SS nice looking disco,, late head lights, grill, bumper, premium roof bars, RR 18" good combo! shames its not green lol!

i would dump the goodyears and go for some 60 profile AT's,
