p3d 879
I take it that you are asking about preparing a terrier for hunting and not training to sit, stay, heel etc.. In my experience/opinion most of the books on terriers are; 1, Stories of digs that particular terriermen have had. They usually take the form of; Went out early Saturday, tried a few earths, dog marked a hole, collared up and left him in. Mixing and baying for 10 minutes,Locater reading was 1.2,Opened up, dog got hold. Dispatched quarry or left run for another day, made good the hole,Well chuffed with dog. 2, Questions that have been answered by known terriermen on surveys; They usually take the form of; How many years in terriers,What type, best dig,Worst dig, best dog, best terrierman, views on shows. 3, The Terrier yearbooks, Multiple short stories from years gone by. 4, Life stories, with all the baggage that brings with it. Passing info on the terriers that they kept. 5, Mr Frains books. (The less said the better). These books rarely advise guys starting out on; 1, Terrier training in stages, 3 months (socialising), 6 months (Bushing),9 months (Ratting) 12 months (run through empty earths) 14 months (Entering). 2, Getting permission, Locating earths, locater selection, tools and how to use them (T-bar) 3, Digging methods, handling quarry, wound treatment. To be fair, the first 2 are written by experienced terriermen for other experienced terriermen. The 4 most useful books I have read that would point you in the right direction are; American working terrier,P.Burns. (Practical advise on a range of topics) Hunt and working terriers,J.Lucas. (A classic, but ignore the 25 men digs) Badger Digging with terriers,D.Harcombe. (Some strongly held views on terriers, form your own opinion) Running with the Fox,Mcdonald. (Some of the best information on Foxes) The best training will happen in the field with an experienced dog and terrierman. Reading books on hunting is like reading books on swimming. At some stage you have to jump in! Hope this helps. Edited March 1, 2011 by p3d 2 Quote Link to post
FightTheBan 1,147
I just usually clip a lead on them then their obedience training is mastered. FTB Quote Link to post
Molie1337 35
I find a stick/boot/fist much more accurate than a book! Joking aside though, time, patients and repetition is the key! Quote Link to post
