Dyfed Powys Land check

Recommended Posts

Just came off the phone to the Dyfed Powys Firearms office , i asked them to check to see if a farm was already cleared for firearms use

they just gave me a very shirty reply

" we will not give out that information over the phone , you must submit a letter asking in writing plus a letter from the landowner giving you permission "

I said i am not asking you to check the land , i am asking you to see if it is already cleared for firearms use , she then hung up on me .

I was under the impression that it was a perfectly reasonable request ?

I've always been led to believe that was the whole idea, you could phone up and ask if land is already cleared. Sounds like someone doesn't understand the system. Might be worth phoning your FEO and asking them to find out, or at least asking if she's correct.

I think what the op is asking is if it's "approved by the chief constable" not whether the farmer says he can shoot on it.

Might have caught her at the wrong time of the month..... Seriously though. I was under the impression (and I might be wrong) that information like that would be covered by data protection act.

The problem is the Farmer " thinks " that the land is cleared as he had a shooting club on it up until recently , but he does not know for sure .

As i have a closed FAC i have to be certain that i can shoot there , unfortunatly he is Lambing this week so really needs me up there ASAP .

The annoying thing was the womans attitude in the firearms dept .

Try again tomorrow..... Ask to speak to an FEO and ask. Failing that write the letter and send it. In the mean time do you have any mates with an open ticket?

You are very sensible to wait until you have a definitive reply from the police. Never rely on hearsay, it is just not worth it. If it all went pear shaped you could be guilty of armed trespass and find that the farmer just cannot remember ever saying that you could shoot on his land! That lady in the firearms dept seems a bit out of order though. In Cambridgeshire all it takes is a quick phone call and they are really helpful. I always posted them a copy of the permission (make sure you ALWAYS get the written permission of the landowner) so that my records could be updated at police hq. Fortunately my license is now "open" so I no longer have this problem but still would not shoot without the landowners prior written consent.

no probs mate glad you got it sorted' good to see you finally got some more permission' do you still shoot the other land mate

Yep mate , still on the original farm plus the one i just got is actually 3 farms as 2 of his neighbouring farms have asked if i can look after them as well, also have 80 acres of corn to keep the pigeons off in the summer . better get a 223 now i think if i can find a mentor

Dyfed Powys insist on it now for a first centrefire no matter how much experience you have.

Thanks again for that Adam .
