Guest REDROB
2 weeks ago we had the chance of some work for my border dog, he is 2yrs 5mts old, the first place was quite big, he went to about 5-6 holes, head in then out then he went to one hole a went straight in i said to my mate i think were on here look out for a bolt, after 5-10minutes i put the box on got a reading which was away from the main earth, now i have dug to him afew times befor and he is the type that dont bay just holds , my mistake was me thinking he had it in a stop end, i dug down about 2-3ft broke through on his back legs he had hold of the fox, so i cleared away the dirt so i could see the fox so it could be shot, i took the dog out went back to dispatch the fox and it had gone, my mate never saw a bolt, i didnt, so back in with the dog he showed at 2 -3 different holes but he couldnt find him. tied him up and tryed the bitch she went in had alook about showed at a few holes but didnt get on. the dog was still good, so tried another spot and more or less same thing happened. apart from giving him more time to settle what can i do to help him out. nelson 0
, first thing to do is have a laugh about it even if you are still pissed of with yourself , its there to hunt another day. The dog has done its job and the finale wasn't quite as expected but so what, i think we've all ballsed the job up some how. I've done the same thing myself when breaking into my Border bitch, i lifted her thinking with me stood in the hole the fox would stay in and play the game and stay and be shot by the Keeper..................WRONG, the ferker bolted out of the hole and away. Next time try securing the Quarry first before shooting. and keep that dog working mate. Quote Link to post

You could try stripping your dogs coat when it needs it! Quote Link to post
Guest REDROB
dawn even if only after afew days or weeks of stripping out your border they will lose there coat if you work them.the coat will be perfect if you dont.anyway was out today found a one holer with fresh sand out side went down the bank to have a look, its stinking i said to my mate, lurcher was very interested border bitch wanted in but i had the collar on the dog so we got the muts back and let the dog in, he went in about a foot and a bit, i could still see him he started to come out so i thought never mind, he got stuck by a root so i just stood there waiting for him i thought come on, and feck me he pulled out a dead fox he wasnt stuck at all, there were no marks on the fox at all, got him off the thing and moved it away from the hole, on the way back my mate shouts fox this fox was out in the field no where to go, good course by the lurcher turned it about 3 times and it was over, border bitch was second on the scene and had the sharp end but she isnt to bad. Guest REDROB
whats up roz dont you believe it happened , or dont you think that aborder will lose coat when out working, Quote Link to post
Dawn B 212
Hi Redrob. If a Border or most likely any wire haired Terrier is ready for stripping, its coat will come out in chunks if its up against a roughish surface. It just means the coat should be stripped out, you will find it unweatherproof and it will hold the dirt more if you leave it. just my opinion. Dawn. See, this dog is ready for stripping. Look how easily it comes out and that nice shiny new coat is underneath!. Quote Link to post
Guest REDROB
dawn ive been stripping out borders since 89, the point i was trying to make is that if you work your border terrier to ground or flushing the dogs coat will come out ( not all over but in bits here and there) as you say on rough surfaces, wire netting, roots, brambles ect.there ears will get shredded and wont look right, ive yet to see a working border with a perfect carrot shaped tail, and they will lose most if not all thier face furnishings, thier muzzles will have no hair and look black. bits missing from there lips nose. be honest dawn how many show people have dogs that they work week in week out, the show dogs coat is all ways even, and 100% in top form,a working dogs coat will be uneven. just my opinion dawn.
