Hi, folks.   I got round to Simon's at mid day to the normal warm welcome and a very welcome mug of coffee. The weather wasn't looking too good but we set off to Simon's permission. There's a track

Thanks Andy you are welcome anytime to shoot in this truly beautiful bit of God's county with me mate. The Went valley and surrounding fields is what every shooter wishes for in a permission of his

Very good read there from you both lads,   I think it's great that this section get out together and become good friends.   There is some quality lads in this section, true gents and talented shoo

Cheers Steve.

There is a vast amount of ancient forest and farmland that makes up my permission in total and I'm very, very lucky, when I read of lads looking for places to shoot and a permission of their own. There is just about every type of air rifle quarry feeding off the crops here and the winds are predictable for successful approaches. My farmer friend lets me know where the main trouble's coming from and I saddle up and shoot over it. Very few squirrels but there's a hell of a lot of mink coming in for some reason, that gets into the woods and the river valley. Tons of rabbits but you really have to be up on your fieldcraft to get to them, And it's a real tough terrain for air rifle precision shooting over long ranges with so many exposed crop fields with very little shelter from the elements. I couldn't design a better training ground for air rifle shooting. You really have to be a cracking good shot and skilled in fieldcraft to get the best of the sport from it.

It's my paradise on Earth.

Sorry I did not comment earlier I thought I had!

Feel like a right ignorant pig now, Read this from the word go. Must of been the fosters I have been sampling to many of lately :whistling:

A superb read of your day which is only ever fruitless to those who don't understand the enjoyment of being outside, This thread has also developed into a fine descriptive read that I cannot help my self from being a bit green about! :icon_redface:

Sounds wonderful over there guys, In such a place time passes way to quickly.

Many thanks for the rad and insight into your land

Thanks again for the comments, fellas

I've only seen a small part of Simon's shoot but from what I have seen it really is a cracking spot with what seems like a bit of everything.

There's the river Went down in the valley, loads of varied woodland, open fields and pasture's with miles of hedgerows running through them and the farm itself with all the surounding buildings.

Now then, about this picture thing...... Both Zini, Davyt63 and Phantom have tried to help me out on this but I just can't get my cluncky old laptop to talk to Photobucket and the like and Simon's in the same boat as me.....

What I'll do next time is to take some photos and email them to one of you guys, if you'd be kind enough to post them for me??

Cheers

Thank you Karpman.

Are you in Yorkshire? Come over and have a shoot and a mooch with us sometime.

You are right about time here. I've spent whole days from dawn to dusk on my shoot and every minute is filled with 60 seconds of sensations of sight, sound and smell. I've seen Kestrels and Buzzards nest building. Roe deer with their young fawns nervously emerging from the woods into the morning mists at first light. Badgers snuffling along the forest tracks made by scores of woodland animals before.

I have a very strong and proud sense of history and this place connects with centuries of human activity. Even the legendary fight between Robin Hood and Little John for passage across the river is recorded in a 13th century manuscript as having taken place over the river Went here. Highwaymen used the valley as a hideout to rob the coaches on the Great North road that ran through Wentbridge village. And Witches lived deep in the valley woods where folks came for spells for good fortune, cures for bad luck, fertility and the like. There was even a trade in unwanted babies conducted in the valley during the 16th and 17th centuries. During the Civil war, when Pontefract Castle was coming under heavy siege by Parliament's Roundhead soldiers, Oliver Cromwell's cavalry and artillery train watered and quartered their horses and Oxen along the river banks and hay fields.

Now it's acre after acre of peace and quiet; where you can unsheath your rifle and walk for miles undisturbed.

I could write volumes about my shoot.

Stick with it, Tony, you'll get there

I've three permissions of my own but there's only one very small one where I'm OK to take guests, sadly...

Stick around on here, mate, I'm out tommorow with another lad (thanks, Benji  ) I met through this place by selling the bloke a gun and he's offered my a day out with him. It's funny where they come from sometimes...

Cheers.
