Don't hurry on it. Let her be a pup and play as long as she can, and work up her condition and reflexes in the process; it's only such a short part of their lives. Best of all take her with an easy going experienced old dog and let the old one give the exemple on hunting rats, maybe when she is 4 to 6 months. Years ago when I had not much work for my terriers yet, I bought me a so called tame rat and let it go in the woods, and the dog had to find it. I had an older dog at hand to either give the exemple or catch the rat if the young one wouldn't. After being bayed, or bitten once, these tame rats suddenly turned quite vicious and defended themselves well to the pup if it would't take care of it quickly.

Most young terriers with the right blood can learn much from catching rats and take well to it.

One advantage of a tame rat is: it will never have Weil's disease or other life threatening sickness.

But you're not going to do that in the U.K are you?!! :)

You can't buy live pet rats to start your dog ratting in the UK. it's illegal. When you think the dogs ready, get it on wild rats, they are free! In reference to the weils disease, what is going to happen when your terrier is called on to rat for real, you could bet the first rat it deals with will be riddled with all sorts of disease. You as the owner have no control as to what diseases the rats are carrying. just the way it goes, with ratting.

all the best with the pup.
