Deerhound x Greyhound 15 months old

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody, my first post on here so please don't bite.

Sad news. I have a beautiful dog that I need to re-home due to a marriage seperation. :( I've not worked him as he's just been kept as a pet. My wife and I took him at 16 weeks. His mum and dad were Irish greyhound and Doxhope - but I'm not sure which way round. I'm not being cagey I just know very little about these things. He's black turning grey/brindle and has been living with another male lurcher.

The reason I came on here was because I'm sure he would make a great working dog. I thought this a good place to ask some advice. He's not quite grown up yet, still a bit whiney. Pretty good recall. Roughly 27 inches. Very handsome, very strong, bright eyes and teeth and he has loads of energy. Loads. That's why I think he'd be better with someone who might work him or someone who is outdoors a lot.

A real beauty he is and I'm sad to have to let him go as he's just starting to grow up a bit - but he's young enough to adjust to a new home.

Any advice?

Thanks in advance.

Ted.

Try lurcherlink or something simalar, if you try and rehome him on here in the hope he might make a hunting dog he will soon get passed around when it turns out he isn't

I'm not saying he wont make a good hunting dog but he will be like a hot potato if he doesn't

Best of luck with him though

I can only reiterate what the others have said: get in touch with Lurcherlink: they are a really good rehoming charity and will be very careful where he goes. The lurcher world is full of plausible people who tell you the dog will always be with them and they'll love it forever: next thing you know they've sold it to anyone with the money, and the poor dog starts out on that merrygoround, each home worse than the last. I know your dog is probably working bred, but he will be just as happy in a good pet home which gives him the right amount of exercise etc.

Thanks guys, some really good points well made. I think I'll give lurcherlink a go.

Skycat: you're right, he is working bred but it's not worth the risk - I'd rather he was in a happy home with plenty of scope for lots of regular exercise than him being passed around from pillar to post.

Much appreciated.

the dogs ready to start why ever give him to ineffect a dogs home?

my brother tried to buy a similar age bitch the other day and he was trueful to the fella and said he wouldnt be used as a rabbit dog as hes current owner had used him. he then wouldnt sell her.

if I took him on id enter him properlie and he would be fully tested (rabbits isnt a test for a 27inch dog) and if he werent up to scratch and werent worth space in my pen yes id pass him on as a pet.

fair play to you mate trying to let the dog do what its ment for. Too many people will never own true working stock with this cuddlie pet/show attitude.

every dog I breed from will have been tested and tried hopefully given futer owns every chance of owning a proper worker.

p.s Iv got no intrest in taking this dog on myself talking purlie hyperphetical.
