optimus 447
Hi I just got back from the vets, Ouch, I have a bloody plumberm Terrier that from time to time just takes a bite out of my lurcher for no reason at all. Any way plummer jumped up and bit her just in front of hind leg and gave her a rip about 3" long just into her side and down the flap of skin. I took her to my vet that I am very happy with his work but, the cost, drugs and sundries £19 the doing of it £107 all plus vat total £147. The vet called me two hrs after dropping her off and said she had came around and was ready to be collected. He made a good job of it but boy do they know how to charge. YOU DONT MIND PAYING FOR A DECENT JOB FROM A DECENT VET & NOT SOME OF THE PRACTICES THAT SEEM 2 MASQUERADE AS VETS THESE DAYS. INSURANCE IN THESE CASH STRAPPED TIMES IS A GOOD IDEA, BUT GETTING INSURANCE 4 A RUNNING DOG IS VERY EXPENSIVE. THOUGH IF YOU ARE ON GOOD TERMS WITH YOUR VET THEN A LURCHER IS AFTER ALL A CROSSBRED DOG & CAN BE INSURED AS SUCH Quote Link to post
shepp 2,285
A lot of them are greedy b*****ds! Always have to get the customary dose of anti-biotics just to top up the bill. Quote Link to post
shepp 2,285
ridiculous what vets are charging i agree! only last week i had my terrier spay total cost should have been £120? luckily because i get working tax credit i rang the dogs trust and i got it done for £30 plus £5 for meds. i agree that we must be able to pay to care for our dogs if they ever do require a trip to vets etc but the charges are a joke Thing that pisses me of is if the dog trust or places such as that can do it for £35 and must make profit, how the f**k do vets justify charging 5 times that amount at some places. there bunch rippin of f**kers There will be no profit on that mate, it's a trust so it is mainly funded by charitable donation. Cold Ethyl 63
Yep its not cheap here either out of hours charge £150 before they even touch the dog the other thing is a general aneasthetic to stitch a dog is ludacrous.Years ago and even my lass has been stitched and stapled with a local and been fine fair enough if the dogs a wuss and wont let them do it by all means a heavy sedative would be required but knocking them out for every little thing nowadays cant be good for them. shepp 2,285
Mine had half a dozen stitches with no aneasthetic at all, she did'nt make a sound. Most vets are just making there life easier and bumping up charges. Quote Link to post

Cold Ethyl 63
My vet must rub his hands and jump up and down with delight when he sees me coming lol.The last few months hes made enough to go on a round the world cruise ffs and thats just with the terrier .Savlon wound wash is the buisness or hibscrub savlon wound spray/wash foams and pushes dirt out and it seems to speed the healing up Quote Link to post
KittleRox 2,147
My sal/grey ,s stopper was hanging off, took her to my own/local vet,he wanted £250 just to stitch it back on ( didn,t want it stitched on ) and that wasn,t including antibiotics etc ,Trip to PDSA sorted read a thread on insurance before, a few folk reckoned the National Farmers Union was the best,do you tell them the breed is a lurcher when you apply ? scalesntails 118
I did mine over the phone. When they asked what breed I said its a mixture of 3 and before I could say what mix she just put down mongrel. Mongrel is the cheapest anyway. Quote Link to post

mattyg 1,862
dont have a working dog if you cant afford to maintain it if somthing goes wrong! vets aint cheap as i know to my considerable cost, insurance is the best thing to soften the blow, no one likes being ripped off, but working dogs get injured and if you aint prepared for the costs then dont have a dog in the 1st place. rant over! matt Quote Link to post

nasher1 258
The vets I use were bought out a year ago by a bigger company and the prices have gone up and up they really do take the piss, we had a terrier with tumours at the time of the takeover and the vet wanted £900+ to remove them, the missus started getting upset and the vet pulled the door closed and said he would do it on the old system as they hadn't updated it yet and did it for £345 all in. and in his words he said " I do this job because I like animals but the people who have taken this practice over are in it for greed". Unfortunatley the same company owns about 7 places in Bristol now so you got to have deep pockets if your running dogs. Quote Link to post
