Tried out some new land today

Recommended Posts

Stevo, Steve, Byron and guest Barry popped down today so we could go and check out some permission I just aquired, its just 5 minutes from where I live so not to early start for me (I'll give it a miss Ray) gave it another miss again today . The main area for rabbits is a hedgerow of hawthorn and a couple of dykes, it was obvious when the farmer took me round last week that there were plenty to go at. When we pulled off the road onto the grass verge on the field we saw plenty of activity and some seemed unconcerned that we were even there, this is strange as they get blasted regular from the farmer and gamekeeper.

Well we decided to have a bash on the hedgerow first, this seemed the hardest option but just to see how it goes and take it from there. We bypassed some of the tricky sets leaving them for a later date but the dog was marking almost every set well so they were holding. The first set was just 7 or 8 holes and we had an instant bolt, good start but its a pitty it was not like that the rest of the time. 3 rabbits came from this but the others refused to bolt so the spades were out, almost all the digs were 4 foot or more, luckily enough it was on the fen and the soil was just peaty sand so easily dug apart from the roots.

We managed about 6 or so sets on this before thinking it would be easier digging on the dyke which was relatively sparce from vegetation just lots of holes. It was a case of running the 40 nets out that we took and then sticking in the ferrets nailing a few then moving the back nets forward and so on. These rabbits were more easily bolted and they came out like bullets pulling the pegs out, some even plopped into the dyke and we had to dive in knee deep in water to retrieve them. They didn't all bolt however and again the digs averaged 4 foot but quite easy going, not like some places we go. The numbers were starting to pile up, the first hedgerow had slowed us down a bit and we needed to pull our fingers out but we are not shy of grafting a bit. There was the usual banter of course, Byron had sore lips and asked if I had any vaseline, what a silly thing to ask when everyone was listening, so apart from letting a rabbit go, (Butterfingers Byron) he wanted vaseline (the vaseline kid) how many nicknames does he want?

It was going sweet, we only missed a couple of holes that lost us a couple of rabbits and these holed up further down or were nailed in seconds by the lurcher, I could have shot them but watchi ng the dog was more fun.

The next door farmer popped in to see how we were doing, thats another one for some permission, he was impressed with the amount we were getting and so was our farmer when he turned up later. Things are looking rosy as he asked me to go and shoot some woodpigeons for him too that were eating his crops, how much better can it get?

We had a guest with us again today, Barry he is a landlord in a pub in Sheffield and he wanted to see how we do it, nice guy and he was on the ball with the slip lead with the lurcher. Suppose we know what the topic of conversation will be tonight over a few beers, he had never seen anyone ferreting before so it would have been an experience.

With the weather being wet, it drizzled heavily most of the day, the camera was seated safely in the van to avoid any damage so the pictures are a bit on the sparce side. However at the end of the session it just dried up enough for a catch shot, where the total was a nice round 60, we will be returning soon to finish where we left off and hopefully bag quite a few more and some more pics and video footage.
