HANNIBAL RISING

Recommended Posts

Just saw a trailer for the new Hannibal Rising movie.

I've read the book and to be honest, it's not that great.

I think they have gotten worse as the time goes on and following that trend I'd give a fair bet that this one will be the worst one yet.

Pity though, to see great movies like Manhunter and Silence Of The Lambs being cashed in on.

Shot their bolt after Silence of the Lambs, mate. And only Jodie Foster saved anything for that. ManHunter was The Film and Brian Cox played Lector as Harris wrote him. (For those who haven't twigged it yet, That's Brian, as Lector, on my avatar! :D Absolutely f*cking brilliant!)

I thought it sad, at the time, that when they asked Cox to do it again, in 'Lambs, he said he " Doesn't do sequels. " Now I realise what a masterful statement of genuine good taste that was! They'd have dragged him too down the sewer of cashing in. As it is, ManHunter stands as a monument to Cox's superb acting characterisation and Harris's own, initial, skill as a writer.

The (milking the cash cow dry) remake of that classic. The thing they called " Red Dragon " ? I've never seen it and wouldn't wish to. I read the reports from people; " Ooooh! She touched the tigers balls!!! " Big F*cking Deal! So What? We remember ManHunter for it's outright and over all brilliance. They rememer that shit because some unkown girlie touched a tigers nuts. Nuff said.

" Hannibal " was patently and blatantly written as a film script. It showed and wrecked any chance of it being readable. I had to laugh when, while in London, I saw WH Smith's offering two copies for the price of one?! An unprecedented climb down! I considered buying some myself, but I had enough loo paper as it was.

" Hannibal Rising " ? More like Anthony Perkins sitting on Harris's back as the pair hurtle from a great height, spread eagled, towards a shallow pool of water far below. I predict one f*ck of a flop and very little splash.

They'll film it mate. And that's where it's all falling apart, if ye ask me; Harris is now writing screenplays rather than novels :(

Didn't you find yeself visualising short scenes, as ye read " Hannibal ", rather than a flowing story line? Let us know how this one strikes ye, with that in mind, please? :good:

I'll let you know what I thought of it once it's read.

I read a lot, rarely miss a night without picking a book up, and if I like a book, I'll read it again. A good book doesn't stop being good just because you've read it before.

And while I've re-read Red Dragon a few times, and Silence of the Lambs, I've never picked up Hannibal again.

I saw the Hannibal film, and liked the parts in Florence very much. But the rest of the film was twaddle, and I'm in no particular hurry to see any others in the "series".

anthony hopkins is supposed to be one scary biscuit

And that's exactly why I feel he ruined the part, mate! Hissing, staring, overtly scarey!

Hannibal Lector, at the time of his capture, was working in a college campus. Now, can you imagine some young, female co ed with pre exam nerves coming to see the Hopkins character? He'd send her screaming with one look and a sybillant hiss! Utter b*llocks! Hopkins makes Lector appear a slavering sociopath!

But look at Cox; From the first words we hear him speak, " Hullo, Will ..... " he's arse clenchingly, edge of ye seat scarey, because he's so Normal and reasonable! Even the imortal line, " Dreaming lately, Will ....? " is delivered as one may enquire after a mates lack lustre Dog. Yet we Know the gut wrenching menace contained in it. Brilliant! :D

I could go on and on. How about when Graham offers to let him examine the case dossier? " Photographs? " :clapper: That one, casual, almost after thought delivery freezes the air! LOL! The man is f*cking GOD!

No. Sorry but, for me, the very moment Hopkins cocked his head to peer into a corner of outer space and hissed, " Claaaaaarrissssssss " I thought, " Oh for f*ck sake! " and knew all was lost

Anyway, Always a good discussion topic; If only to keep reminding me of such great lines from ManHunter! :D
