Col_c88 41
well just got back from collecting my first two ferrets from a lad on this forum, there huge compared to what im used to seeing will need to get the hutch extention sorted asap, put them in the hutch and they had a good roll around and found the daft bits of meat in there and then started to dig and pull the hay through random holes haha, cant wait to get them working! how long will it take for them to get used to me before i can work them or can i go at it straight away? very exciting time for me .. also the first time my girlfriend ever seen a ferret she got all "awwwww look at them" then the "EWW they stink!" came haha Quote Link to post

web22 27
as long as they're not too young(i'd say 8/9 months or more)and if they are ok to handle then you can start straight away, good luck with them and enjoy your ferreting! Quote Link to post
Dazzam 239
If you're confident with handling them get out there and enjoy yourself as someone has already said it's not too long before the season is over. If you're not confident with handling them wait until you are, as many a ferret has been ruined because of poor handling. Have fun end enjoy. Quote Link to post
Col_c88 41
oh, im confident, ive ferreted before with mates and the guy who i got these 2 off has done a great job, theyve only nipped me once and that was the first time i got hold of them since then theyve just had a good sniff and a bit of a scratch at my knuckle think ill take them out sometime this week as the job i was on turned out to be smaller than we thought so finished it in 2 days lol Quote Link to post

Col_c88 41
well i had them out (didnt see the give them another week comment), they dont seem to like the collar being put on, they riggle so much when i try put it on, i guess i just need alot of practice i only have the 1 collar at the minut so it was more of a excorcise than working, netted up with my few nets i have (getting more made), put one down the hole (after spending 5 minuts trying to get the collar on!) then let him have a mooch about. They were keen, sniffing around and they came out of every hole, but the place i went the sets are huge so i am guessing the rabbits gave just a single ferret the run around. only 1 bolted all day and of course it was out of an unnetted hole. i let them do 2 sets each then switched collars.. i had to dig once.. but (embarrasing...) not for a ferret... for the collar!!! (told you i need more practice putting the collar on lol).. the smallest one was quite deceiving and i wasnt sure how tight to put hte collar so i just went with luck, had to dig 3 foot to get the collar back BUT at least it gave me some experiance with the mk3! all in all i enjoyed it!,ive cut both my hands on god knows what, ripped the back of my realtree deerhunter cammo(i do airgun shooting)and been scratched off one of them when trying to get the collar on....when they came out the hole and i was trying to grab them they just jumped around and seemed to want to play, was funny for a wihle.. they were asleep all the way home and now there tucking into some egg and chicken!.. next outing wil be saturday, gonna just play with them every day till then! web22 27
practise makes perfect, keep going and working the smaller setts until they are experienced or you are working more than one ferret to stop them getting the run around as much, and putting on the collar is something you will get to used to they have thick fur so you have to put it on pretty tight(i do it up then try to turn it,it should be hard to move, and give it one little pull forwards and it should stay in place, missing bolt holes is something we all do!and the cuts and scratches are a welcome pain when you are bagging up!!
