birddog 1,354 Posted February 7, 2011 Report Share Posted February 7, 2011 i was contacted at the weekend by a local farmer on the recomendation of another re clearing some rabbits for him, i went out this morning for a wee guided tour mostly hedges but ferrets and guns no probs seems to be plenty of bunnies too. i asked about taking a lurcher and after meeting one of my bitches he has agreed but recounted a recent event where he ( in his 70's) aproached some guys coursing with 6 or 7 dogs and was politely told where to go or theyd burn down his farm. talk about shooting ourselves in the foot hey im not saying always do everything by the letter of the law but a wee bit of commonsense will help us all Quote Link to post

All she wanted was her say ! Just nodded and said yes ! Dont go on their land no more but I spotted her on the public footpath the other week and told her to get back on her land lol ! Do I get subsidies and tax relief to run a business in my back garden? Did I get my garden from stealing it from people already working the land and then told them to work for me or did I purchase it? Do I let people shoot vermin in my garden for money? Can I use my garden for storage and rent it out to people? Don't give me the back garden speech heard it all before. Fact is chasing a few hares on stubble isn't a major issue. I don't agree with people threatening other people but it is usually the farmer comes with the bad attitude. There is always a prick out there somewhere. 6 - 7 dogs? Why? Threaten to burn down farm? Why? Personally if a farmer/keeper or whoever were to approach me wrong side of fence i would play it by ear. If they simply ask me to leave i would say "fair play mate, im on my way, sorry to of been a nuisance". If they were rude/abusive/aggressive i would probably try to talk them down "whoo hold on mate, theres no need for that, im not here to do you any harm, i just wanted to catch a couple of rabbits, you obviously want me to leave so im on my way". If that doesnt work then its fire with fire. As for shooting my dog.....well its never happened to me BUT if it did i would be wanting revenge. Quote Link to post

The two dont have to go hand in hand, but many forget this. I been caught/stopped a few times and usually after being polite and friendly have ended up with permission or worst case being allowed to pack up and walk away with no hassle. Even if they are a c**t - turning the other cheek is a good feeling, walk away and come back and take the game but leave the fences/barns/houses. Quote Link to post
