That's a sad end for a wonderful sporting quarry, choking to death in a wire. Think of the run he could have given you with a longdog behind him, very, very sad.

I was waiting for that post :( .........Nightwalker......dont want to get in to an argument with you mate, but as a moddy you of all people should think on about what others can read and take from this site....

To describe the end result of Woogas skill as you have done is very sad to read coming from one of our own!

That is the type of thing you would expect to read on any anti litrature you may care to mention and IMHO this coming from a mod on a hunting site can only be a small victory for those who would seek to ban yet another of our traditional pastimes.

As moddys are allways saying "Think before you post"

I think we are cut from different cloth, I have never believed that 'anything goes' but we all have to draw our own boundaries and mine stop short of snaring. I simply can't defend snaring any more than I could defend the use of the gin trap, the baiting of captive animals or dog fighting. I think there are better and more humane alternatives to the control of rabbits, hares and foxes and faced with better alternatives, including more sporting alternatives we should use them. I have never set a snare despite having done rabbit control professionally in the past and having keepered part-time. I no longer catch rabbits or anything else professionally, I am now, as you rightly point out a sportsman and I am proud of that, i.e. of being a sportsman and if in my travels I come across unsporting behaviour I will feel perfectly free to comment on it.

In my new role as a Mod, I am tasked with protecting the forum by keeping posts legal and on-track and countering text-talk and bickering etc. As well as being a Mod I am also a member with my own views and I think that it is important that we think about and debate issues of what is acceptable and what isn't. I hope that we can have debates like that. Personally, I hunt, shoot, trap, run dogs, fish and even go digging occassionally (the last time I dug a fox was three weeks ago) and have done for more years than most forum members have drawn breath. Over years my views on things have changed and they continue to change, I did many things as a callow youth that I would never do now. I hope we can have a forum where posters can do more than just say 'well done mate' or 'nice dog mate' but actually debate, educate and inform one another.

Why did I make my first posting in this thread then? I made it because I noticed that Mitch came from somewhere where it is still legal to course hares and as a coursing enthusiast, I know that the brown hare is one of the world's great sporting animals. As a coursing man I hate seeing hares snared and if Mitch wants to see some real sport he should get himself a longdog and see what a hare can really do with a fast dog behind it rather than content himself with choking them to death in wires. If I can change one persons mind and get them out with a dog rather than setting wires I will be happy, now, I guess it is over to you.

mitch has a lurcher and he also has snares so its up to him which method he uses you were spouting the same anti snaring rubbish on another forum run by the big fish  and your at it again :censored: if you dont like it well your choice dont do it simple enough  dont read the posts and as for the wording of your posts are you delibrately being a prat or what :censored: you normally read rubbish like that in the local gossip colums written by some long haired sensationalist seeking reporter we dont need your negative input to add fuel to a smoldering fire so keep your opinions to your self. this is a trapping and snaring forum exactly what it says on the forum heading so you know what to expect so why come in here and bang on about this :censored:

Ive notice quite a bit lately, how some fellas are outright against any other form of control of hares apart from coursing.

I have always understood that the point of coursing was to be a test of a dog, not to kill the hare!

The real difference here is the terms "sport" & "pest control"

Sadly very often the two don't mix.

I think the whole principle of snaring hares is an emotive subject and gets many backs up amongst members who see the hare as a sporting quarry of no equal....I'm not so sure if snaring itself is at the brunt of the issue or more so whats actually being snared...that said I visited certain shooting forums where you couldn't even mention shooting hares without everyone being up in arms..If its pest control fair enough, theres nothing sporting about snaring, its a very efficient means to an end...as with many things we will all disagree on certain topics...

Lets try and keep the thread civil, after all opinions are like arseholes, everyones got one.

TO TRUE BIG FISH ,

SOME PEOPLE IMO ARE HYPOCRITES ...........

THEY WILL USE ANY METHOD TO KILL RABBITS , YET COME OVER ALL RELIGIOUS WHEN HARES ARE MENTIONED , I WAS BROUGHT UP ON A DIET OF MOOCHING / POACHING........ THE NAME OF THE GAME WAS TO GET "GAME " IN ANY METHOD WHICH WOULDNT FIND US IN COURT ........ AND WOULD FIND US WITH FOOD OR SALEABLE GAME ,

OVER THE YEARS I MOVED AWAY FROM THIS TRADITIONAL HARVESTING , AND WENT INTO COURSING AS MY MAINSTY ........... YEP I TRAVELLED THE MILES , AND REALLY ENJOYED THEM " WILD " TIMES , HOWEVER OVER THE LAST GOOD FEW YEARS THE CALLING OF MY YOUTH HAS RETURNED BIG TIME , I ENJOY THE SNARE AND TRAP THE FERRET , NET AND DOG ............IVE RAN DOGS , DUG TO DOGS AND FERRETED FOR NEARLY THIRTY YRS .......... AND WHO THE HELL DOES ANYONE THINK THEY ARE TO JUDGE ??????

I CERTAINLY WOULDNT EXPECT A FELLOW SPORTSMAN TO BE THE JUDAS !

WOODGA , CHIN UP MATE ................ HUNTING IS ABOUT YOUR OWN CONCIENCE NOT ANYONE ELSES !!

I THINK THE BEST SIGNATURE IVE READ IS .........

RESPECT YOUR QUARRY DEAD OR ALIVE ............... TRUE WORDS

Duckwing, I have always made my views perfectly plain, we differ in our views about what is and isn't acceptable but there is no need for name calling. We all have to think for ourselves and make our own judgements about how we live our lives. Clearly my judgements about some things are different to yours, but you cannot deny that you judge other sportsmen just as I do and in fact you have just contradicted yourself by posting some very negative judgements of me! I think that people new to hunting can learn all sorts of things from this and other forums and one of those things is that we all have very different views of each others activities; Like many coursing men I dont like snaring, I know plenty of people who ride to hounds who absolutely despise fox lampers (are they Judas's as well?), what about the deer stalkers who cheered at the ban on the use of dogs on deer or the well known professional rabbit catcher on here who was whooping with delight when Cymag was banned, is he a traitor as well?

I have just been on another site where there is a really good debate going on about the ethics of lamping hares, I think it would be interesting to have similar debates about many aspects of our activities - snaring would be one of them, perhaps the use of draw dogs would be another and I'm sure that with all your experience you could think of other issues to chew over but to do this we need to stay cool, think and post reasoned arguements rather than lapse into name-calling. I think this thread has gone on long enough and I'm not going to post on it any more, it's a shame that we cant seem to have a decent debate about these things.

Some people get asked by landowners to control the hares, and as coursing is banned how else are they going to control them, with snares, nets and gun or just tell the landowner you will not or cannot control them and lose that hard won permisson.I know what i would sooner do.

NIGHTWALKER ,

TO BE HONEST ................. I BELIVE THERES NO NEED TO DEBATE THE RIGHTS AND WRONGS OF HUNTING [ WHATEVER THE METHOD ] AMONGST OURSELVES

WE SHOULD TAKE FOR GRANTED THAT HUNTING AND COURSING ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS , ........ DIFFERENT NEITHER RIGHT OR WRONG !!!!!!!

THE FACT IS , JUDAS SEEMS TO ME THE CORRECT TERM FOR A FELLA THATS BASICALLY TURNING HIS BACK ON FELLOW SPORTSMEN , DEGRADING HIS WAY OF LIFE ...........THE PEOPLE YOU DESCRIBE ARE JUDASES

CYMAG ............ WELL , THAT AINT HUNTING , THAT DISCUSSION DOESNT BELONG WITH THIS THREAD

just my opinion but this whole argument reminds me of when we all (hopefully) stood together up london and gave up a few days and not at inconsiderable cost to some of us, to stand up for the fox hunting people, hopefully through commeraderie, and mutual respect, inevitably hunting was banned. Within weeks the CMW is getting a steady flow of letters from disgruntled fox hunters ranting on about lamping blood thirsty maniacs rampaging around the countryside maiming foxes, and if this is allowed to carry on foxes would be wiped out in this country. blah blah. Forget the sour grapes ,lifes to short, dont start having a go at a legitimate pest control method , just because your pis..d off over something (WE) also tried to help stop so that you could continue to chase the blo..y things around for fun.
