lots of us carry knives when out wandering with the dogs, i usually have my leatherman, the thing is as its a lock knife i believe it not legal? if that the case what is legal and what aint? i have read that the blade needs to be under 3 inch? is an opinel legal as the blade can be locked?

just wondering as when out and about i dont fancy getting nicked for carrying an offensive weapon.

you have to have a valid reason for carrying one...for work and so on

you would think this is the truth but its not. i got pulled in my van on my way hunting i was searched and they found a 3 and a quater inch locknife ,the french wooden handled type designed for hunting ,in my van were three dogs my lamp rucksack and some fishing gear ,i was then arrested for carrying a bladed article in a public place and van impounded even though it was fully legal i got my van back and went to court i was fined 400 pounds and 120hours community service because it was a lock knife and over 3 inchs and even though they had stopped me i was in a public place the pavement ,the arresting officer was a major anti and told me hunting rabbits with dogs is also an offence more bullshit

IT IS ILLEGAL TO CARRY A KNIFE OVER 3 INCHS IN A PUBLIC PLACE NO MATTER WHAT REASON YOU HAVE BE VERY VERY CAREFULL

opinel lock knifes are not legal atall as they lock

almost certain a moving vehicle is classed as a public place,so if youve a gun in the back it needs to be in a bag.got stopped before xmas and they were ranting and raving about an opinel been in the the van .got stopped fri night and they never even asked about a knife .

Yes, the boot isnt classed as a 'public place' like the rest of your car.

I would say that he had done you a bit, I would have questioned whether this guy was within reason to arrest you if he told you that rabbiting was illegal, from things I have heard they can arrest you quite easily when you are within the law, just my thoughts.

I use an opinel knife and leave it in my jacket.

It is legal to carry any slipjoint knife (non locking blade) with a blade of 3" or less, no reason is needed but it can still fall into the offencive weapon category if you threaten someone with it.

I carry a small Case whittler with me everywhere, at all times.

ANY knife ,sword ,machete, chainsaw can be carried, if you have good reason for it.

If you have any of the above with you in the car, with no good reason ,this is an offence. unless locked in the boot

( NOT in the hatchback, ie in the back of the landy, as the inside of your car is a public place.

This is incorrect. You were either wrongly prosecuted or there was more to the story,, No offence meant bud ,but this should have been chucked out of court as fishing is sufficient reason to have a fishing knife with you.

The knife I take fishing is practically a machette and have come across the police 2 or 3 times when fishing from piers etc in the summer and it has been a non issue even when I have held it in my hand with tourists walking past me. If I wasn't fishing or started threatening people with it I would expect to get arrested.

Seems to me you had a bad copper and an even worse brief.
