graham4877 1,181
i have just spent the last 16 months training exercising feeding and nerturing my bitch.to be honest i could have guessed she would be no world beater a few months ago but to end up with a dog that just isnt really interested in game is gutting to say the least.i could exept a dog that isnt the best as long as its an honest tryer but to just sling the brakes on and not really bother makes me proper angry.not one for putting dogs to sleep and dont really like shifting them about but whats the point in having a hunting dog that dont want to hunt.shes gotta go i think.just gotta find a goodpet home now .ireally have given this dog chance after chance to come around but she just seems less interested every time i go out.looks like ill be starting again.has anyone else had dogs that just dont want to know. Matt give me a ring mate,, i will take the bitch back if you want she can keep her sister company,, . sound mate.was gunna give you first shout anyway.ill be intouch. Her mother was a slow starter as i have said,,,she was best from 3 to 7 years old,, shes 10 now and was out running stuff keen as even not last nigh but the night before,,, there is a fair dose of deerhound blood in the line,, which are renowned slow starters,, but beleave me when they come good they come good,, they are a dog for life,,,,,, Matt i wil take her back no messing,, but i would urge you too keep hold of her mate,,, i would be tempted to leave her off till next season and let the bitch mature,, not just in body but in mind. I have took it very steady with her sister as shes a slow starter,, but if iam honest i think these type make the better dog in the long run. Did you try running her with your mates dog present after a rest up a few week,, if so what happened mate,, cheers. did you breed the litter mate??? yeah he did.nice fella too He sounds it mate, he's happy to take it back witch is good of him, others would not give a shit! I know what i'ed do if i was you, but i'm not in your boat, like the man said the mother was a slow starter i think he said she was 3ish when she come good, and he's happy to take her back, so i know what i make of what he's saying! If i sound a c**t i don't mean to be at all mate! Its your dog your choice! Quote Link to post

matmorgan 49
My whippet dog was exactly the same, his first (learning) season he did very well, showed great promise. His next (proper) season he was horrible, pulled up at hedgerows/fences, some slips he did not even bother to run if he thought they were too near an edge or too far away. The type of land here, small fields, lots of edges, you have to do long slips to stand any chance of getting anything. I had always been used to bully x, do or die dogs, so this was very disheartening for me. I put a thread up on a different forum, some people called him a jacker, said he would never be any good, others said...wait, when he mentally matures he will be spot on. So pleased i waited, when he hit 2yrs he totally changed, this little dog now puts his heart and soul into everything he does, and is an absolute pleasure to take out. It even seems as if he learned by his mistakes...if he don't try, he don't get! Dont mean to be blunt but if you give up on this bitch now, then you would be the jacker not the dog bluntness is not a bad thing.it saves alot of pussyfooting around.im glad of your input moll Quote Link to post

merle24 61
I know Matt has put alot of effort into this bitch and he has picked the runs to bring the bitch on and give her the confidance,, i would say hang onto this bitch too see if she comes good, i would lay her up now untill next season, i wouldnt let her seen much at all, would let her head mature. Then next season i would take her with other dog and just let her watch the action,, for a cpl of outings on the bunnies,, i would hold her back and let her see a fair few kills and se how she reacts,, iam sure by then the bitch will be going mad to chase anything she sees,, as she will have mature in the head well by then and will come into her own,,, its got to be worth a try as all the hard work has been done. I would glady take the bitch back and play a few mind games with her over the summer to try to press the wright buttons while letting her head mature,, then send her back down to you at the start of next season,, so you can run her to see if there is any differance,, if there is no progress i would find it a pet home,, i think my mother would take her in as a pet if that fails. Will leave it with you mate,, only you can decide on what to do,, theres no rush,, all the best whatever you decide,, think i sent you my new number mate,, if not pm me i will send it you again,, give me a bell mate,, atb,, . 8 Quote Link to post
matmorgan 49
Matt was she starting to run a bit off,, before she grabed that other thing ?,, did that make her run offish more ? And i know this maybe a silly question,, and sorry if it sounds patranising, as in no way is it ment to be,,,,but does she have any food at all before a outing,, i mean even a tit bit or scrap,,,,, as if you gave her farther even half a handfull of biscuits he would run half harted for sure. if you want to come down and see what im talking about in the flesh you r very welcome.if the weathers right bring a dog and ill show you plenty of game its all on permission.just let me know.i normally need at least 3 minutes notice to go out lampin lol Quote Link to post
NEWKID 27,047
I hope the dog comes good for you mate. I would also say that merle24 seems a really decent bloke, fair play to the offers he has made you, with him knowing the line he has bred and showing that much confidence she'll come good , maybe you should give her a little longer. Good luck in whatever you decide. Quote Link to post

Matt i think you are doing the right thing,, to give the bitch the chance to mature and pan out in the head,,with all the time youve put in and the way the dam was its got to be worth it. I dont think anyone can guarentee 100% that she will come good,, but i really do think there is a good chance of that being the case,, iam not saying it because i bred these dogs either, a spades a spade to me. I have seen lads shift young dogs on before and regret it,, as they have come good in the end,, when left to pan out abit. I think youre doing the best things,, good on you mate, . Quote Link to post
