hello i am thinking about a career change and i am just wondering if the is any training places in the north east of england for someone looking to get in to the pest control industrie thanks

Contact Lisa Wales 01924 268445 at Killgerm Chemicals and have a chat with her with regard what direction you want to go and she will advice you. They are based at Osset near wakefield just of junction 42 of the m1.

I did a career change roughly 7 years ago and have done various course at killgerm.

you can view the courses on line.

Without having undertaken relavant training you will be restricted which products you can purchase.

I work for a local authority and in the near future some one interested in pest control is coming to have a week of work experience.

I would try your local council and see if you can get something similar.Apparantly it is something regularily done.

When i gained employment with the authority i spent 6 to 8 weeks going out with officers to get tained how to undertake treatments and how to do it safely.

Which course? there are a few on there

Sorry pal, the general pest control. Worried it will be a waste of money doing modules im already familiar with but maybe worth getting the paper to prove it!

No probs. Ye, i did that course. Its a good course but you dont really learn anything that you couldnt with homework. What it does do however is give you a great certificate. The BPCA general is proof you know a good bit and it will open doors in the PC world.

Yes im thinking about it being a good certificate, it just puts me off when lads with all these certificates ask my advice (sorry if that makes me sound like a big headed nob!) and im thinking its goin to cost me over a grand to get that bit of paper, and if it hasnt given others iv met a lot of useful info then im getting stiffed!!! But the way the world turns these days sooner or later those lads with the right cert's will get contracts i'll miss, just cause they have ticked all the right boxes.

Unfortunately its all about paperwork nowadays I have spent 10 hours today and half of yesterday preparing paperwork for a brc contract my head is spinning and I might not even get it. trust me if paperworks not your thing pest control is not for you.

Its not the doing paperwork or even studying that bothers me, its just paying so much do be 'taught' things by people im proberly more competant than. Last year I was 'given' a mole job by a large pest control company, when I turned up the customer told me that the big company had gassed the runs 4 times and it hadnt worked. The ground was pure moss and totally unsuitable for gass, maybe even dangerous being so close to the house yet the chap who had been to the job before me was weighed down with certificates. I caught the mole that afternoon but what worries me is paying good money I can ill afford to make someone else richer while I learn nothing. Sorry if that makes me sound a pompous tosser and I know we can all learn more and I would love to study insect pests more just dont want it to cost me a fortune. Just need to weigh up the costs compared to how else it could be spent like improving the web site promotion etc.

No it doesnt make you sound like a pompous tosser!

Some things you know your good at and some things you know your not. I love reading the dogs section on here but i will never comment cos i dont have a clue and i dont pretend to. I do know about moles though and i dont think there is much i dont know about them. Horses for courses!

.......but then a grand buys a nice bit of advertising!!

Hi mate its no good advertising if you dont know how to do bedbugs carpet beetle fleas woodworm cluster flies etc

I apreciate that mate, iv been brought up with it all so im not clueless and starting from scratch. But things change and you need to keep up to speed. Can I survive just doing the things im more than capable of tho, thats what im asking myself. Im not doing to bad at the moment, better than alot who have certificates for the whole sherbang!! I want to expand tho, shall I expand my range or do more of what im doing? Sorry im rambleing on and iv hijacked someones thread! Its just difficult to know the best direction to take.
