Don't know the age of your dog but if the second ball hasn't dropped by 6 months old you should have him neutered because the retained one will turn cancerous. A dog with only 1 even though still fertile, should not be bred from as it's hereditory.

It shouldn't have any effects on him by being neutered, his ability to hunt should be the same.

just let him have the one ball lad,i've a dog here with just one and he's around years.i've seen a good few over the years with only one ball and none ever got cancer or anything.over here if they have one ball they are never rushed to the vet for an operation and they are grand.don't worry about it.
