1 man and hiz dog 1 Posted February 4, 2011 Report Share Posted February 4, 2011 Around me local patch there is a few foxes .... but i am struggling to find earth upto date i know of one .... and a large drain which would be to risky to enter a terrier and there is no second entrance and it looks as if it split all over the place and could be over 1000 yards in length ... i was wondering if dropping artificals in strategic spots might tempt foxes in ... obviously it would take one or two seasons for foxes to find them etc but what are your thourght and has any one got any pctures of artificals theyve built or any tips FTB ... all the best lads the main problem is the quarry.the more quarry you have the better chance you have of finding a fox to ground,it doesnt matter if it's a rabbit warren or a artifical if the quarry is there it will be getting used Quote Link to post

I am starting two young dogs on approximately 800 acres at the moment, so I know your frustration at finding occupied earths. I know the Fox are on the land. But on your 1500 acres I would imagine there are 2 or 3 occupied earths/territories you have not found yet. I think a good finding dog would be more use to than artificial earths. Try to get a local terrier man with an experienced dog to walk your permission. I think you might be surprised where the earths are! I had a good finding dog years back, would enter deep into cover and find earths that other dogs had run past. (Could use him now). Artificial earths have two problems in my opinion. Firstly they are specifically designed to make the fox bolt. Erik's website shows the one in/one out design. Mostly used for quick bolts to Hounds or guns. From your post this is not what I think you are looking for. You want to dig with your dog. Secondly the artificial tubes are too large and straight, Big terriers can nearly walk through them. They do not provide any of the corners,tight spots,roots that a dog needs to learn from. If you were going to go ahead with it anyway, I hope it works out for you. ATB Quote Link to post
