dogs and when to call it a day

Recommended Posts

after reading all those great dogs when do youse lads give up on a dog or no when its not going to make the grade as a working lurcher or all round game catcher me personaly if it doesnt shine at least ayear to 14 months plan b last 2 pups i bred were on the ball at one year old and catching allsorts by the time the stubbles were cut how many chances do you give a dog me personaly half a dozen if its not connecting ive made a bloomer , lucky i only bred my own or of tried and tested stock ,i no some can train adog better and no how to enter them better and have acsess to better land but what about it , all the good dogs ive had anfd others have been at the game and you can see the potentional as youngsters 7 or 8 months onwards what do youse think

an interesting point whin.i have a 15 month old bitch at the moment that i keep making excuses for.for instance last night i took her out and she was fine for the first 7/8 or so runs.then she seemed to loose interest as if she had got bored.i would slip her and she would either trot 20 yrds and just watch it or chase half harted :wallbash: .this is not an unfit dog infact shes quite the oposite.good food lots of exercise.its not the first time this has happened either.in all other aspects..ie obedience, looks and companion shes great but when that moment comes were she leaves my side to hunt she seems like shes not really that bothered.i have invested alot of time into her and am gutted at how things are going.the land i hunt is literally plastered with all sorts of game so i have no trouble setting her up for the advatageous run.i understand what some lads are saying about waiting to see thier second season.but thats if you have a tryer.a dog that has its heart in the job will normally come good even if some take longer than others.but when thier showing a lack of interest in game then i feel things may not have vsuch a bright future  .atb.mat

i have a first cross collie greyhound, thats 8 years old. its taken me 6 years to get him to walk at heel off the lead , including whilst lamping ie not using a slip. he has been a b*****d to train.

To be honest my dogs won't even see a rabbit let alone any other critter at 7/8 months S/Handed so it would be foolish to say it will or won't make the standard i ask of my dogs at that age?,i ain't a

some good ansewrs and some never understood the question some did bendrover , etc i start pups young with ferret and older dog then let him see a netted rabb getting bolted then as he matures a look on the lamp by 7or 8 months hes learning then as he matures to a year i see the potentioal coming through and at what age wil he be ready , for stubble hares etc pre ban , if you are out all the time pup learns quicker easy as that if they have the [bANNED TEXT] instincts in them , diffrent breeds are diffrent but all in all saluks colie types only had one dog that took till 14 months and she did it all in the one nite with her older mate was great as i was getting pissed off with what was what with her at time

i agree wae whin if it aint showing some serious promise at maybe 7 month old deffo a year old, it probs never will

but all dogs are diffrent, an some do take a wee bit longer than others,

if ye have raised the said dog from a pup, i would like ot think by 7/12 month i got a fair idea of its worth an potential

when i first got him i started him off all wrong. i let him tag along when i was coursing, instead of starting off ferretting he started off on hares . if i put him on a rabbit day time he just dissapears big style looking for hares, if he doesnt put one up he can be gone for half an hour.

while i am ferretting he has a habit of moving on to the next warren before i have finnished . he goes completley deaf and i have to go and bring him back. he is crap on the lamp he cannot seem to pick up rabbits he seems to be rounding them up as apposed to catch them. if i had a shot gun he would have shot him many times over.even though he is crap he sometimes amazes me with the odd moment of brilliance. he has had some real bad injuries and i have had cancer and survived so we have both been through the mill and i would not swap the crazy b*****d,

Superb mate, Thanks for the amusing and bemusing read. My dog is turning out to be a proper cock. Its all my fault though but were in it for the long run, thick or thin :whistling:

Cheers pal good luck with the future.

i gave up on a dog i bought in as a pup after nearly 4 years she was a smalll rabbiting dog and is still a very good pet to an old lady on a farm ,but i have a major problem whith my bitch MONKEY which i bred and had a lot of time planning this line and its future but shes inbred to her father and ive followed the litter progress hardley any of the litter are intrested in rabbit but excell on toothed quarry some point blank wont even chase anything 3 have been put to sleep one is getting a very good name, mine is really not intrested in rabbits and is to small for bigger stuff but hasnt realised this yet .

Ive said this before i honestly belive she is retarded and everything is taking longer to fall into place she is 3 years next month and still is lacking everything a good dog needs i know loads of my mates would have shot her by now but she carries the entire gene pool that i need but with bad traits i dont want ,

SHES GOT TILL SHES 4 YEARS TO PROVE HERSELF as my patience is running out

I dont understand the grade system.A few weeks ago RFYL offered a two and a half year dog for stud. Many of the long time dogmen gave the guy pellters.Saying a dog isant proven untill four or five years. Now we have whin telling us he knows at 7 or 8 month if its any good.So dose the grade come down your own expectations of your dogs abillity for the job in hand.If so maybe most of our dogs do make it.

Whin you seem to know your dogs. And if you think one is no good at 7 or 8 month Thats up to you mate.Who am i to tell you otherwise. Its this it did not make the grade that has me baffled. You say 7 or 8 month other 4 or 5 years.I owned a collie/grey/whippet pre ban.Never took its fist hare until 18 month daytime after that there was no stoping it.Took its first daytime roe three month later.Reading some of the topics that dog would have been passed on.Or put to sleep after sixteen month(did not make the grade)For some the grade doset allways have to be perfection that would just be silly and many good dogs would go to waste.atb. CATCHER,I THINK WHAT HES TRYING TO SAY IS,DID YOU SEE SOMETHING IN THE DOG YOU SPEAK OF BEFORE IT KICKED ON, I LIKE TO TAKE A BITCH OUT THE BACK END OF 10 MONTH AND HOPE SHE SHOWS ME SOMETHING,GIVE HER A TEST(NOT OVER DOING IT)SHOW ME SOMETHING.BUT IF SHE DOESNT.NO HARM ,PUT HER BACK ON THE SHELF FOR A BIT AND TRY AGAIN.AND IF SHE DOES SHOW,SHE STILL GOES BACK ON THE SHELF FOR A BIT.ALTHOUGH EVERY SPARE MINUTE IS SPENT DOING THE BASICS.
