FUJI 17,288
So what age would you give a dog till Ppocket? To be honest my dogs won't even see a rabbit let alone any other critter at 7/8 months S/Handed so it would be foolish to say it will or won't make the standard i ask of my dogs at that age?,i ain't and never have been in any great rush to start dogs away, what's the big hurry anyway? ALL of my dogs have ran and ran strong at 10 years of age or beyond and i still have two albeit long retired at nigh on 14 and 16 years of age respectively, seen many a dog ran young and been finished by 3/4 years of age at the oldest, they just lose the desire & love for the game...when all's said and done you wouldn't send a child to do a man's work would you? vld 62
My first bitch was a dream from the off - obedient, loyal, good all rounder, and could see she had all the skills I wanted before her first birthday. My second bitch was a pain in the arse from the off, more difficult to train, headstrong, would piss off and come back 10 minutes later etc etc. Not as quick, nor as good on the turn. I could easily have got shut, but I perservered with her - tbh, alot of the faults were due to us not bonding (like I had with the first). Starting bringing her in of a night time - on her own - just treating her as a pet for a bit etc. The turn around in that bitch is unbelievable but she's now two. I dont start working my dogs properly until they are 1 yr old - I know wer're all different about this - but I don't see the rush. I hate seeing dogs passed around, tbh, it does my head in. Sometimes you have to critique yourself (and your failings) not those of your dog. 1 Quote Link to post

FUJI 17,288
The dog i got off Joe called Ginny was confiscated by the Scottish police in November 09,the bitch was never intended to be returned to Joe,he only said she had to go back if i wanted rid of her,if she were to have pups the litter was to be halved that was the agreement we settled on,the bitch would NEVER have been sold on by me,she had the makings of being a superstar? since then i let Joe use my old dog over his Bull x bitch for free, favour for favour kind of thing So i NEVER sold the bitch on,Joe done me a great favour by offering me the bitch at 9 month old when my other bitch was killed. So there you go matey Edited February 4, 2011 by poacherspocket22 Quote Link to post

iceman001979 1,316
A dog from 8 till 20 months is just learning what they are breed for.I think dog should be aloud in its 1st season to make mistakes and learn from this also the owner. After the 1st season is over the dog should learned about gates fences ditches livestock etc etc. Then in his 2nd season a dog should be judged at the end off it if it has it or not Quote Link to post
martinabley 4
i have a first cross collie greyhound, thats 8 years old. its taken me 6 years to get him to walk at heel off the lead , including whilst lamping ie not using a slip. he has been a b*****d to train. when i first got him i started him off all wrong. i let him tag along when i was coursing, instead of starting off ferretting he started off on hares . if i put him on a rabbit day time he just dissapears big style looking for hares, if he doesnt put one up he can be gone for half an hour. while i am ferretting he has a habit of moving on to the next warren before i have finnished . he goes completley deaf and i have to go and bring him back. he is crap on the lamp he cannot seem to pick up rabbits he seems to be rounding them up as apposed to catch them. if i had a shot gun he would have shot him many times over.even though he is crap he sometimes amazes me with the odd moment of brilliance. he has had some real bad injuries and i have had cancer and survived so we have both been through the mill and i would not swap the crazy b*****d, 4 Quote Link to post

bendrover 556
after reading all those great dogs when do youse lads give up on a dog or no when its not going to make the grade as a working lurcher or all round game catcher me personaly if it doesnt shine at least ayear to 14 months plan b last 2 pups i bred were on the ball at one year old and catching allsorts by the time the stubbles were cut how many chances do you give a dog me personaly half a dozen if its not connecting ive made a bloomer , lucky i only bred my own or of tried and tested stock ,i no some can train adog better and no how to enter them better and have acsess to better land but what about it , all the good dogs ive had anfd others have been at the game and you can see the potentional as youngsters 7 or 8 months onwards what do youse think every dog shows signs of being ready at different times.and likewise show signs of being no good, at different ages.hypothetical question whin but i understand what your asking good owners know whats when. 3 Quote Link to post

vld 62
The point I'm trying to make is 9 times out of 10 I think its the owners fault if the dog fails to make the grade. 1) you've bought shit - theoretically if you've bought a good pup from proven workers it should turn out to be a good dog - eg build, physique, stamina, temperament etc etc - I know there are always a few exceptions but these should be minimal. 2) its down to you and your training methods. Would I keep trying to turn a shit dog into a worker, would I buggery - too much of a liabilty but I wouldn't pass it on as a worker either, thats just wrong, I would keep it on as a pet or rehome as a pet only. Too much shit being bred and people willing to give "shit" a go, if it don't work just get rid one way or another and I don't like that mentality. Think carefully about what you're breeding, think carefully about what you're buying and what its gonna be used for and there would be many more better matched dogs and owners. Quote Link to post
