dogs and when to call it a day

after reading all those great dogs when do youse lads give up on a dog or no when its not going to make the grade as a working lurcher or all round game catcher me personaly if it doesnt shine at least ayear to 14 months plan b last 2 pups i bred were on the ball at one year old and catching allsorts by the time the stubbles were cut how many chances do you give a dog me personaly half a dozen if its not connecting ive made a bloomer , lucky i only bred my own or of tried and tested stock ,i no some can train adog better and no how to enter them better and have acsess to better land but what about it , all the good dogs ive had anfd others have been at the game and you can see the potentional as youngsters 7 or 8 months onwards what do youse think

I wouldn't be making any major judgements until it was fully grown both physically and mentally sometimes it might take the penny longer to drop, as long as it ain't applying the brakes on stuff or showing no interest, I'd also have to look at myself and chew over my input etc before making any final decsision

 

Had my lamper apply the ABS the other week it was gut wrenching to be honest :sick: , luckily what she pulled up on is of very little interest to me personaly wouldn't consider writing her off though, cause she very good at other stuff, plus she really nice dog just to have around the place

to me it all depends how much you as the owner of the dog as shown the dog...

my dog is 3 and the lasses is 4 , they aint seen as much as some dogs , some have probably seen more in one season , so to me they will take longer to shine ... i dont slip a dog on a fox till its over 18 month ... my dog as seen 6 now ... lasses dog only seen his first last night as he wasnt ready for one till this season ... i could of slipped em early and fecked them up but what is the point ...

 

the dogs get given a good enough chance by me , why ? because i have a good bond with my dogs and they arent just workers ,they are friends to..they can read me and i can read them ,we know what each other is gonna go before it happens ... my dogs aint the best dogs but they do what i want and thats all that matters to me ..

I just accept it as it is , would just have it around me as pet , in my view they all work to some extent.

Having had my dog from a pup, and building a bond would be to gut renching to get rid.

As long as they work and I am happy with them then that's all that's count my dogs don't see asmuch as others but aslong as they give it there all am pleased I think I would only get rid if they point blank didn't want to work or was very limited to what they could catch .

Im still learning the trade with lurchers and terriers so Ive kinda gotta accept my dogs arnt going to be world beaters. When I am lucky enough to be in the position to only accept dogs of what I consider are up to 'my standard' then ill only keep the right ones to ensure I keep getting the right ones. As for age I think its down to the individual and the quarry, some arnt willing to give a dog till 2 to make the grade others are etc etc

All dogs are differnt, you can have brothers from the the same litter. One will take fox at 14months old, the other 22 months old. And if you got big dogs bullxs some are still like pups at 15 months old, there is no rush is there.

Let them be pups ffs if they can handle a bit of graft at 7 - 8 months then let them have a few but to judge a dog by this age is ridiculous metally and physically they are no where near fully matured give them until at least 2 years or 2 seasons before making a judgment at least it would be an informed one

Alls he's said is you can see the POTENTIAL from 7-8months ONWARDS. He hasn't said he gets rid at that age. Read the thread properly then reply.

The lad is saying he gives the dog till 12 months then plan b my self i would give the dog a good go and wait till at lest 2years one of the best dogs i have had didnt catch its first rabbit till it was 16 month and so i think a pup needs not to be rushed to many dogs end up on the peddlers merry go round through people wanting it now and not giving the dog a chance alb troter

FACTS ARE EVEN THE DOGS GROWTH PLATES & MUSCLE STRUCTURE ARE STILL NOT DEVELOPED, NEVER MIND WHATS GOING ON IN ITS HEAD. YOUR DOG SHOULD BE READY FOR SOME RUNNING AROUND THE YEAR TO 18month MARK & GIVEN A PROPER INTRODUCTION TO THE GAME. ONLY FROM THEN YOU CAN START GETTING SOME IDEA OF WHAT YOU HAVE. PERSONALY I LIKE TO GIVE A DOG UP TO 2yrs THE SUBJECT OF A "learning curve" HAS BEEN MENTIONED BEFORE ON HERE & THERE IS NO UNIVERSAL TIMELINE A DOG SHOULD FOLLOW. OBVIOUSLY SOME DOGS SIMPLY DONT HAVE IT, & YOU WILL KNOW THAT SINKING FEELING WHEN YOU SEE IT, NO MATTER HOW MUCH U LIE TO YOURSELF. ENJOYMENT IN YOUR DOGS UPBRINGING ETC WILL ONLY BE HAMPERED BY SETTING HURDLES FOR THE DOG AT 7/8 MONTHS. HOWEVER IF YOU HAVE DONE YOUR BIT AS AN OWNER & THE DOG ISNT WHAT YOU WANT THEN ITS UP TO THE INDIVIDUAL IF HE KEEPS OR GIVES IT AWAY WHETHER TO A PET HOME, OR TAKES HARSHER ACTION IF THEY DONT WANT THE CHANCE OF THE DOG PASSED AROUND AS OFTEN HAPPENS .
