Coneytrappr if you have a male dog it may also be a bit more headstrong not a problem just patience is the key and sort out the recall on the pup to a good level that your happy with because they can work on a bit so getting the pup back is what counts.

Rearing gets my vote, and entered correctly make excellent rabbiting dogs, i have a little blue whippy coming on 3 years of age,i bred myself, mother from the collooney kennels, sire a parkstone racing whippet, Texas tea, fantastic little worker, then i have a black bitch, bought from jettyboy if anyone knows them, she is exactly 1 year old today, absolute mustard in the field, both dogs work alongside each other and give me great joy, december 2010, i watched my blue bitch katie put up a longear, fantastic course, and yes she nabbed it on an uphill stretch,

enjoy your dogs, i do

As above we all talk about the way a whippet is bred determining whether it is a working whippet or not but realisticly what should be classed as a working whippet....

If i have two show line whippets that i work then breed and keep a pup from that i work and breed are the pups then classed as working whippets ? Or if i have 2 working types as pets that i keep a pup from dont work it then breed from it are the pups then no longer working whippets ?

In reality what realy does a whippet need for it to be classed as a working whippet ?

a large percentage of whippets whether they be from show race or working blood will come to work if in the correct hands

My dogs all work and have been reared from day one for the job but i have owned and do own non working bred whippets that do the job. I think the most important thing is the way you bring the pup up if from day one its out with working dogs and treated like one it will only be what it knows to be. I do agree breeding plays a part but most whippets have working dogs within a few generations regardless of there breeding.

both parents working worker to worker every time for me weather you add show blood or what evers, but to me working isn't just a cjhace and a catch it has to have brains, nose and staminia as well, i dont want a dog that runs a few rabbits and make a few catches but has no firld crtadft, for me its the full package that make a dog a worker.

all whippets in the right hands work to some degree, brains, nose, stamina the`ve all got that, enter them right and they all work, some better than others just the same as any other working breed

yes my vote was reared and if brought up right a they have the prey drive and great nose naturally they will catch rabbits but BRAINS is what they lack from a good lurcher imo.but then working together a tail chasing whippet running with a well educated lurcher can make a perfect team while ferreting
