As above we all talk about the way a whippet is bred determining whether it is a working whippet or not but realisticly what should be classed as a working whippet....

If i have two show line whippets that i work then breed and keep a pup from that i work and breed are the pups then classed as working whippets ? Or if i have 2 working types as pets that i keep a pup from dont work it then breed from it are the pups then no longer working whippets ?

In reality what realy does a whippet need for it to be classed as a working whippet ?

i think rearing is what makes it a working whippet but it always is an advantage if the dam and sire are working aswel

Pretty much agree, all whippets should make workers if entered correctly and I know of several who are bred from showlines but have made excellent dogs in the field, one in particular who is bred from champion show stock is really making his mark as a worker and is also making his mark as a stud dog covering many workingbitches

My thoughts exactly realy a whippet is a whippet imo for what there bred for every whippet should be capable of taking a rabbit with a little training.

Although i dont debate the fact that a working line should technicaly throw the over all better working dog , The show type should be and still is more than capable of doing what a whippet is supposed to .... Catch rabbits.

Thats a nice offer for somebody Whin, i wish somebody like you would go on the working whippet forum and put an offer up like that to them. I nearly got kicked off the site for giving my honest opinions about whippets....nice...(and i actually like whippets)

Oh and i think a combination of good entering and good breeding will improve the chances of getting a good working whippet. Although mine was top show stock and worked his nuts off...couldn't expect more from a whippet.

Good thread  now what do all you whippet people think is the best way to enter them? I've got a seven month old pup here and it is the first whippet I've owned. Would be interested to know if there's anything particular to keep in mind when bringing on or should is it just like bringing on any other lurcher?
