johnny boy68 11,726
I know the Welsh don't like the English(in a rugby sense)but I don't like it when a player is booed especially one of Wilkinsons calibre,he was never a dirty player or when interviewed he never comes across as disrespectful.Something that a lot of Welsh fans were guilty of last night. Malt 379
every time a great welsh player comes or any great rugby player at any game ive been at HQ ETC the english applaud jonny willco came on last night to booo,s i had the welsh down as better than that SAD He was getting booed by the English at the Lions game I went to see in Cardiff a few years back.. You know the game isn't going to be a spectacle with him on at 10, he's there for one purpose - his excellent goal kicking ability. We revere players in the no 10 position, but not just for their ability at striking a dead ball... Sorry mate, but for me Johnny Wilkinson is the symbol of everything I hate about the game. He's the Antichrist to the free flowing, expansive game of rugby that I love. Got to disagree there mate........would you class Neil Jenkins in the same bracket?Jenkins was a brilliant kicker who carried Wales for many years.....it was down to Jenkins that the Lions beat South Africa in 97!I love a free-flowing open game where the out-half is jinking and leaving back row forwards on there arse but if we won a game by our 10 kicking 7 penalties then I'd be happy. In any sport you play to your strengths and Wilkinson and his kicking have been the catalyst of most of Englands success......though had Toby Flood not got pile-drived by half the Welsh pack then Jonny probably would've stayed on the bench. The grinding, slow, tedious method of killing the game until the opposition's patience runs out and they concede a penalty. Speaking as a fan of the game & not just a Welshman, when it comes to England under Johnno I can't see any progress with the English game. Already the English media is talking up the team's world cup prospects after yesterday's match, and if I'm brutally honest I've seen England play better than that & loose a match. Wales were pretty abject yesterday, and have been ever since the '08 Grand Slam. Beating a team who could only manage a draw against Fiji (2010 autumn tests) is hardly a marker for a decent world cup run.. I'm putting the state of the Welsh game down to the state of our regional game here in Wales. With the limited number of teams, the richer regions are hoovering up our best players and they are not playing regularly enough, or consistently enough in the correct positions to maintain their form. The regional teams were set up to advance the international team, but at the minute it's having the opposite effect.
