TIMMAY 6 Posted February 3, 2011 Report Share Posted February 3, 2011 I dream about these open warrens you see in some pics on here, but 99% of my ferreting is in cover of some sort. On one of my permissions there is an area of about an acre, which is all thick bramble and fern. I tried ferreting it before, with just the dogs to catch, as setting nets seemed like an impossibility to me. I nearly lost the ferret, despite having a locator as she could move through the warrens and cover quicker than i could move on top. So how do you guys go about this type of warren? I know clearing the area would be the obvious answer, but i don't think the land owner would be up for that. Quote Link to post

A gamekeeper on one of my permissions cleared about 200 yards of it for me to get to the rabbits we had a good old time then I can tell you. Otherwise get in there with a spade and thrash the f*ck out of it like we do, as long as you can net the holes ok and they will purse up you are laughing. Its hard work you will be sore for weeks but you will love it. Is it anything like this, we did this a couple of weeks ago and had 50 from it, worth the effort or what? Quote Link to post
The one 8,467 Posted February 3, 2011 Report Share Posted February 3, 2011 See if you can cut it into sections and just run longnets threw it ,you should know if theres something in the net as the top line will be bouncing up and down . .Ive been asked to clear bits before ferreting but i just say im no a gardener a day spent clearing a acre of scrub is a days ferreting wasted Quote Link to post

albert64 1,882 Posted February 3, 2011 Report Share Posted February 3, 2011 just walk it down mate, you'll be suprised when you start walking it how quickly it flattens, if its realy thick you wont need nets you'll see the rabbits trying to get through the briars and there usually shallow so not hard digging and within a couple of weeks it'll spring back up so not ruining the set, i love doing this type of set as others usually pass them albert Quote Link to post

I usually have a couple of pairs of trousers on for this kind of work- saves the legs a bit. I also wear a pair of leather gloves and carry a pair of secatures. Net the holes that arn't to difficult. then enter the ferret. Some will hit the nets,others will bolt but will be confused because all their runs have been destroyed. The dog will pick these off easily. And the rest will have to be dug . as albert said in his post rabbits under heavy cover are usually quite shallow Quote Link to post

Only thing is you get lazy and end up shotgunning warrens you normally wouldn't dream of And aye you can get the big hobs out, the ones that usually waddle off with 2 or 3 purse nets attatched to them.
