Ron Weasley 83
I recently secured some new permission. It's a house with a few acres of land around it- a couple of paddocks at the back seperated by a small spinney, and some nice tall trees along the driveway. It was the trees that got my attention really, as I'd seen several rooks in there as I drove past. Anyway, I went and had a look around last week. Took my rifle, but was more interested in getting the feel for the place. I dicsovered that there's several rabbits on the property that I've been instructed to shoot if I can, and a few squirrels too, as well as the large numbers of rooks and pigeons. I went back today for an hour's mooching. Again, I saw a few rabbits, but wasn't able to get a shot at them. I tucked myself up in a bush to ambush the rooks, and I didn't have to wait long before I heard the distinctive calls of rooks overhead. They dropped into a tree just in front of me, and from a crouching position I managed to thread a .177 FX from my Ultra through the twigs and into the killzone. After that, I set off to the spinney between the two paddocks as I could see a number of woodies in the sitty trees there. As I entered the trees, I was distracted by a sparrowhawk taking off from about 5 yards in front of me and catching a blackbird, right in front of my eyes! It then landed about 10 yards to my left to feed! It was one of those 'I really wish I had my camera' moments. I'd forgotten all about the pigeons at this point, and when I stepped backwards and snapped a couple of twigs, the trees errupted with woodies in all directions! I'm going to be heading back to this spot one afternoon to pick the pigeons off as they come in to roost - looking at the numbers, I could put together a nice bag! Long write up for one in the bag I know. Here's the photo. Edited February 3, 2011 by Ron Weasley 2 Quote Link to post

Ron Weasley 83
Thanks guys. Yes, the Ultra's really are excellent. This one is completely standard at the moment, and is unbelievably accurate. I'd recommend them to anyone. Quote Link to post
paulk73 151
i agree with whats already been said. i love watching the sparrow hawks work. im lucky enough to live backing on to a big steep banking covred with trees. and this time of yr the sparrow hawk comes at least twice a day to ambush birds feeding on the bird feeders or table.
