ear issues becoming a pain

Recommended Posts

If it keeps bleeding whenever he shakes his head or excersizes then clean the wound, glue it if you think it needs it. Cut the toe off a sock or get hold of a girls legwarmer and put it over the dogs head. It hold the ear against the head and stops the wound opening up when he shakes. Leave it on all the time for a couple of days but check the wound everday. You can work the dog like this and it shouldnt open the wound although he cant hear as well so dont be surprised if he dosent seem to be listening.

I found this worked with my jrtxwhippet, he had a bad split and kept shaking his head and opening it up, at the time they slept in our hallway and it ended up looking like a tatantino film set! It took about five days for the ear to heal enough to take the sock off.

Good luck!

A bad split where the gristle inside the skin has been torn or cut can take several weeks to heal properly: this is because it can't knit back together and the skin needs that time to grow right round inside the two sides of the split. That's what I've found at any rate. Great advice about the sock: but you may need to stick the edges of the sock to the dog's head to stop it slipping off: make sure it isnt' too tight.

Re working the dog before it has healed, if it the gristle has been cut: don't! Fast exercise makes the blood course round the body faster and ears have lots of blood vessels in order to help cool the dog down whent it is hot: that makes cuts bleed even more: and will dislodge the tiny clots which are trying to form to heal the wound.
