Aaron_butcher 17
I've got a 9 month old saluki/greyhound and we've been taking him out with the ferrets and bolting some rabbits for him just to get him started. He chases them no problem and will stick to them all the way round the fields but he just wont grab them up, he just keeps his mouth round them but doesnt close it to pick them up. He will pick up dead rabbits and his rabbit dummy without batting an eyelid but as soon as its a live rabbit running round a field he just wants to mouth it. Any ideas or is it a practise makes perfect thing? Ta, Aaron. Quote Link to post

DazAllison 32
Good advice already been given mate as the lads said steady dose it remember it's still a pup so give it a chance don't over run it, get yourself a rabbit skin and keep playing tug of war with it and keep at the retrieving work and plenty of praise when he lift the skin/dummy and eventually the penny will drop as they say, just keep at it mate! All the best! Quote Link to post

And then it'll probably only be good for 1 run because the dog will scran whtever he catches before you reach it. not being funny just wudn't do it that way 3 turns but i it worked f you then wo cares . Keep at [bANNED TEXT] ur doing Aaron, atleast he's sticking behind them. My pals pup would put 1 half hearted turn in then come back waggin his tail and he clicked eventualy so i wudn't worry at all if i wer you. Quote Link to post

Ta, Aaron. perhaps hes a vegan na only kidding mate stick with it and he will klick when he finally does make sure you give him the best praise ever sounds like he loves the chase but when you reward him after he pick one up i can guarantee you you wont have a problem ever again ps try and get out with an experienced dog that should sort him Quote Link to post
rab 123 1
i thought you had a onder dog. itl do is sometime. my dog lifted them at the start all the time. now he cant be arsed with them. a odd time he would run for them but since he had his 1st fox he pays hardly any attention to rabbits. what sort of cross is it. fresh earth 47
Starve a pup thats still growing its bones and not fully hardened to then run it on bolted rabbits .... Cracking advice that eh ? Id give the dog a chance as said its young a few EASY slips and personaly bolted rabbits are not the easyest specialy where i am as there back to ground after 30yards max. Get a skin and ragg the fluk out it with him let him know he can take hold of it and wont get a row for it as said he will pik them when he's ready its a puppy thing just mouthing iv had 3 or 4 do it started a bit early. My old bitch wont touch dead game throw a rabbit she wont flinch at it leave a dead one she wont look near but soons she knows theres movement she would go through a wall for it . I dont like training pups with dead rabbits at the end of the day its a pain when there running about with your already dispatched quarry as the next is bolting or trying to take them out you hand walking home thats no use to me nor is a hungry dog. I train daily but never run or do weights without eating at least once before that that day. I feed mine breakfast the day im out or a liver or something at lunch time depending on the specific dog and how i feel it runs best but these are seasoned mature experienced animals i would never starve a pup longer than 24hrs and i would only be starving if i were using a barf diet.
