Fasting your dogs? Do you do it?

Recommended Posts

Two questions here really - would appreciate your thoughts/advice:

Currently I feed my dogs every day - however, a mate of mine says you should clem (fast) them one day a week. What are your thoughts on this - and if you do fast them one day a week - do you choose to do it on a day when you know you won't be working them?

Secondly - after all the advice on here I've gradually moved my dogs from complete dog food over to BARF diet. I'm giving it with some cooked rice, cooked veg/fuit and sometimes fish in oil - obviously they're loving it - volume wise though it doesn't look too much and it goes down in seconds - I'm wondering if its enough - so for example the 42lb dog has 1lb of BARF with rice and other bits shown above per day - should that be enough? She's only working properly 2- 3 times a week although she is walked daily obviously. I'm new to this BARF stuff so bear with me.

Cheers all.

dont over do it with rice they will cramp, veg a handful only for roughage, fruit the same,

everyone feeds different,to me a bullx needs plenty to carry weight for holding etc,a whippet or grey or simular you need to keep a eye on them so they dont get fat,

i feed a percentage of the dogs weight unless they are pups, then they eat all they can

2% percent to hold weight 3%percent to increase weight

my method a 25kilo bitch gets 500gram of meat and 125gram of biscuit,

if i add owt else it comes off the weight of the biscuit,ie handful of veg,i take off 50gram of biscuit,

after they have been run hard day or night i up the dinner by 100 gram of meat and extra 50 on biscuit

this is my way others just fill a bowl and feed that way, others as much as they can eat,

if you dont weigh owt just keep your eye on them,if they look to light add more or less if they get to heavy,

winter time add more summer less,if your adding sardines or mackeral or veg oil, deduct the

amount of biscuit, like i say my way of feeding

I feed smaller dogs that higher motabilisms twice a day every day.

Large dogs once a day and they go without one day a week, here it's a Sunday.

Was told by a farmer that he only fed his sheep dogs 6 days a week and it does them good to have a 'clean out day' as wolves and other carnivores do not eat every day. I was only a kid hanging around to watch sheepdogs but it stuck with me and i've always done it with my own dogs.

Thank you for all the comments.

I've got a bit of a mixed buch - my 1/4 bull is 68lb and the JRT is 17lb- they get mixed biscuits, 1lb of barf, veg and household left overs - I'm not worried about them as I leave food with them and they often goes back to it in the day - ( I know they say that you should take a bowl up as soon as a dog stops showing interest in it- but I dont)

The pup is 22lb and is fed twice aday - she started life on complete food and used to eat it fine but since introducing BARF she will not eat the biscuits at all - so she's a worry - I leave biscuits in her food but also give her pasta/rice etc - she eats around the biscuits

My 1/2 greyhound/1/2whippet (42lb) - shown in pic has a scabby nose (not contagious or anything but vets have never been able to get to the bottom of it) its her that I'm trying to avoid the biscuits on just to rule out any food intolerances - so she gets the rice, barf and veg and she is the one I'd worry about loosing weight. Shes also getting kelp powder.

the advice on here has been great and I think its really good to get feedback from other people and someone to talk to if you have concerns. Thanks lads and girls!

Sounds like you are giving a good mixture of protein, fat and carbs so shouldn’t go far wrong. As to starving I can see no real use to this as you just have to feed extra on the other 6 days which will overload a little more than needed and the starve day will empty the stores of energy in the muscles and liver which in turn will lower energy levels for a day or so afterwards.

PS if you feed rice/biscuit etc you are not feeding BARF, you are giving a mixture of raw and cooked, what used to be called a balanced home made diet. BARF has no cooked or cereal, mind I recon what you are doing is better than BARF.
