Percentages and their effect on a lurcher

this is why we run a pure greyhound dog!! we can breed off him knowing that when we do its a genuine line we are using and he works well  every single person who has a lurcher on here has got greyhound in there dog but probably 25% at most no the greys used in the breeding   the greyhound is just a greyhound attitude is a joke in my eyes :wallbash: if you want the best, find the best :victory:

strange that your wanting best dog,how much will it cost you running said greyhound on,then to find out its not up to scrach, will you then try another,,,when you can just buy a pup lurcher from working stock, what you have seen both dam nd sire work,nd are happy with them, its a hobby just enjoy it,you will never breed the best lurcher in the world thats a fact, its always some fluke what happens by chance to some kid that dose not even know what he has,or even how its bred,,,but hey you keep trying the greyhounds, when you could have been enjoying lurchers work.just trying to help bud not pulling your efforts down, thats 100% effort 0% fun.atb mick

i hear you mick  ive got lurchers aswell mate but ive gone past caring on here now so ive shot the greyhound and will just use any old cur  plenty of ex-racers about

no way to determine what percentage is really in a dog, genetics arent accurate. just because you cross say for example a grey/saluki with a grey/bull dosent mean that you will automaticly get half gr

the reason people line breed, br,ed the same type or simliar is so you dont get all the pigs and pokes stuff bred collie type to saluk type they turned out decent dogs some very good but wouldnt throw

I've said it before, but on here folk are far to hung up on percentages..!!   As far as i've seen, when there is more than two different breeds involved, then its all just a throw of the dice on ho

What Ideation has been saying is bang on the money,

basically any percentage even a 0.00005% in theory can make a difference, and if it didnt many breeds of dogs today would not be around. its all about what is in that percentage and how it reacts with other genes from the other dogs, and what gene combinations occur so on and so on, and is completely random.

a dog has 78 chromosomes (39 pairs) each chromosome can usually contain anywhere from 100-1000 genes!!! so 1 dog could have 7800-78'000 genes, that in itself is a huge variation and is altered due to in-breeding, cross breeding and even breed to breed breeding.

basically in my view the best way to breed a dog is the best to the best, as there is no other species on the planet with as much variation in it then the dog, and in theory but highly improbable you could have a "pure" greyhound and breed it to and average sized mongrel, the mongrel may have a gene that has been passed on for 100's of years and is only activated if you like when it is next to a certain gene of that greyhound hound has and when this combination occurs the resulting dogs may be all black, or very large, or have no teeth, or be illergic to pollen etc etc.......

by breeding the best dog at its job to the best dog at the same job, you will usually nine times out of ten end up with good dogs that can do the job the parents did and not get too hung up on how much is in them :victory:

saying that though adding new breeds etc into the mix can make for very surprising results but always expect high "wastage" results and find homes for dogs that may not make the grade prior to breeding if possible (not always easy with an "odd" combination as people cant tell what they will be like lol)
