There was a melanistic fox shot several years ago in Kilmessan, Co.Meath thats in the Natural History museum in Dublin. But I've a funny feling it's been taken of display. Just a quick Question for you all.......If you Dug it.....would you dispatch it and have it mounted or would you let it run In my younger days i would of dispatched it but now......i would let it run Every fox looks nice whatever the colour but at the end of the day it will still kill all it can and if you dont kill it someone else will JMO Quote Link to post

paulk73 151 Posted January 31, 2011 Report Share Posted January 31, 2011 there was a black one in a cemetary not far from me a couple of years ago. there was quite a few sightings. then it dissapeared for a few days. the next time it was seen, it was dead. presumed piosoned. then there was a sighting of one about 20 miles away from there. last year. kernow oli 28 Posted February 1, 2011 Report Share Posted February 1, 2011 I remember digging one about 20 years ago with my dad and step brothers in our moor at the bottom of our farm, we opened up and dad grabbed what he thought was the dogs back legs untill the black brush came into view!! was funny looking? we let it run and never saw it again or any dark cubs in the area?? did have a couple of BoB tailed ones though great photo is that black un though cheers oli Quote Link to post

We came across a silvery one without any red or brown once, in Germany, (definitely a fox, not a badger) the dog bolted it from a big place and they shot, don't know if they hit it but it went in again further on, and after a while the hunters got impatient and wanted to move on, believing it wouldn't bolt a second time, and asked me to call the dog off so we didn't get that one. Never seen such a black fox, not sure what I'd do if I find one, sure, I'd be stunned. It's true that if you don't catch it, someone else will, but would be nice if such a fox would reproduce first so you get a few more of those. I love the looks of that black fellow. They should have mounted him. For his own good, at least he's less visible in the dark.... Quote Link to post
