Micro chipping

Recommended Posts

the bitch in my avatar had her chip move right down her shoulder,,,, the scaner only pics them up when you go right over the top of them,,,,, if you dont go down the shoulder it wont pic it up.

i also used to chip,,, i had a stall at shows,, but to be honest getting £10-15 out of terrier and lurcher lads was hard work,,,, they would pay that for a quality collar , couple, or lead ,,,,, but chips , dont get me wrong i did a few, but not enough to make it worthwhile,,,,

i think the chips are a great idea,,,,, trouble is most of the rescues rspca dog catchers ect, dont scan , or if they do they dont scan the hole dog,,, just round the neck.

i was thinking of chipping all my pups the next time i need to breed a litter,

that way if they are dumped or rehomed by their new owners + end up in the pound or a rescue i can get them back and contact their owner to find out what the f**k is going on!

all my own dogs have just been chipped after the recent theft of my lakie x bitch

You can't get pups chipped until they are 6 months old.

As above, yes ye can. Iv had a few terrier pups from 8 weeks old, they all came ready chipped. They have to be due to the docking.

My beagle x jack was 10 months when i got him and i had him chipped same time as the jabs.

All of my dogs chips have migrated, usually down one of the front legs. I dread to think what might become of a running dog if the chip migrates along the spine or lodges in some other joint. Has anyone any experience of this?

It's rare for chips to migrate but does happen. I'd be surprised if all your dogs had migrated chips.

I've used chips for 13 years now and they've never moved.

The only 1 i personally know of is a mates Rottie whose chip is halfway down front leg but it still picks up on the scanner.

I have never known of a chip causing any problems, moving or not, to any dog. They are very safe and imo it's not worth risking losing your dog for the sake of a minimal possible side affect of chip implanting

Thanks for comments - Its just I took my pup to get her chipped to two different vets and a pet sanctuary place that do chipping - all of them said they won't do it until she's 6 months old.

Thats ridiculous mate, everyone knows that scum will nick pups as well as adult dogs. They can get lost as well. Most shelters wont let you take a pup unless they chip it first so it dont end up as a stray in the shelter later on & as for Vets, they should know better :censored:

Most animal charities are backing a campaign to get all breeders responsible for chipping thier pups before they go to new homes regardless whether they are pedigree or crosses, planned ot not. If it comes in then you have to micro-chip and register every pup you breed. Nothing has happened yet but i can see this coming in due to the increased pressure on rescue shelters and the amount of homeless/lost/dumped/stolen dogs.

Rescue shelters should thoroughly scan all dogs coming in which includes all legs. Even if they missed a chip and a Vet (new owner) picked one up then the dog would have to be returned to first recorded owner regardless of if it was adopted out.

A well-known rescue where i volunteered did not scan all dogs if they were busy but this changed when a BC dog was adopted out and a month later was scanned by a vet who found the 2 chips (1 implanted by the rescue centre for new owner). There was a big fuss over it as the dog had to be returned to the first owner and the adoptive family were really upset to lose the dog. The shelter now thoroughly scans everything as they dont want to get caught out like that again.

I'm certainly going to go back to vets now I've read the posts on here - and ask why the f**k they can't do it when everyone else can??

Was suprised with pet rescue place as it was only a £10 and I wanted my pup done there and then (you know when they have these road show things). Thanks for the advice. BTW - my other three dogs are chipped - wouldn't have it any other way - its a bit of piece of mind.

thats good that happened shazza to that rescue kennels,,,, but its just the tip of the iceberg,,,, to many organisations that dont,,,, and its a real shame as chipping is a great idea.....

its not foolproof of course,,,, as i know first hand, the dog in my avatar was lost, and never found despite her chip,, but like i say it was down her shoulder

Also need to add as far as the law is concerned a dog is property but possesion is 9/10ths of the law.

Unless your dog is very disticively marked and you have detailed photographs of it proving it 100% to be your dog you will not be given the dog back even if you find it with someone else (and i'm talking about doing this legally).

The only guarentee's of getting the dog back is permanent identification by Tattoo or micro-chip.

14 years ago i was burgled and taken from my kitchen was my 5 month old Rottie pup. I reported it but got little help from the Police. A week later i had a bunch of lads from further up our road sitting on my front wall with my Rottie pup on a lead, i called the Police and they came out and told me they had to ask permission of the lads to allow me to prove the dog was mine (he was trained to do 2 unique tricks they wouldn't know about). Of course they said no. I was then told that as they had the dog and "1 dog looks like another" they couldn't give me the dog back as i had no proof he was mine.

I was also cautioned that if there was any trouble over the dog or it was "stolen" from them the Police would know where to come and i would be in more serious trouble than them.

I never got my dog back and they would regularly taunt me with him so i moved in the end. Since that day i have micro-chipped every dog the same day i get it.

Some vets won't micro chip pups until 6 months of age because it gives the skin a chance to be grown into so less chance of the chip migrating. My eldest bitch was 3 years old when i chipped her, my other 2 over a year and the chips are still in the same place but with my more recent pups they were done at 8 week old and the chips have moved already and they aren't even a year old. Ideally i would like the dogs to reach 6 months of age before chipping but it's a risk i really didn't want to take.
