Guest whitser
i've had some good digging this season but none to my terrier dennis. all my digging has been to other lads terriers. i was out this morning with shitzu and dennis failed to enter and find in a live earth. we dug with shitzus patt. the frustration is starting to get to me, all i want is a decent working terrier. Guest whitser
Some dogs mature quicker than others , yours is still only a pup in my opinion even if he was interested i would only give him a few handy digs this year and hold him back untill nextyear anyway only my opinion. thats the problem, i am trying to get him handy digs he wont enter. i'll keep trying him thats all you can do. i would be happy if he only got a couple of handy digs this year, really happy. whin 463
17 moons most of the pattts ive had were well going at seventeen moons ,if hees not keen to go well you either hold of or a pet home , i start mines at a year and let them killl smalller prey and work him up take him on his own see what he thinks , but i wouldnt spend for ever most good dogs ie feild trail spaniels lurchers were showing promise when young same with the patts ive got they had cubs and were well ready the following winter at bigger qaurry adult foxes etc alot depends on breeding and temprement i had to hold some of my young dogs back at ayear thye would face most things then they soon learned they had to bay and stay on stronger qaurrry hope the dog works out on you , all the best Quote Link to post

toothless 1
whins right enough, the best way to bring up a terrier is to graduate them through prey, quarry, whatever, at about 5-6 months, they should b getting rats stoats etc, and after the dogs hsd a couple of kills , let the doc see them goin into pipes where they can enter and kill, and so on making the quarry bigger as the dog gets bigger and its confidence builds, at 8-9 months i give mine feral cats to harden them up for when they graduate to foxes themore cats the dog see the better and more confident it will b when they have there fox, it also gets them used to the punishment they will get from teeth, its vital to start terriers off as soon as they r able the more expeirnce the better, i would scrap that dog get a pup offf good workin lines and start again. david2363 42
You actually go LOOKING for feral cats? There are a few on my permission and my pup is mad for them, but I go out of my way to avoid the feckers. Still, different strokes and all that. Quote Link to post
Guest foxtrack
You actually go LOOKING for feral cats? There are a few on my permission and my pup is mad for them, but I go out of my way to avoid the feckers. Still, different strokes and all that. the best dog in my kennel was given to me by my mate at 2 years old showed no interest in anything tried him over the next year still no joy then at three and half years stated killing foxes now kills 90% he works a right tuff nut any other dog would have gone a long time ago but these days i give them a bit longer chance my own line of terriers self enter at 9 to 10 months but then uve got a job to hold them back till they are at the right working age i know ive got rid of young dogs in the past that could have became good dogs if i had more patience dont rush them and most of all dont try to entre them infront of boys who have little experiance of it they pass stupid comments about the dog whitch pisses u off the next thing the dogs off if u got roam and time give them chance theyre not machines Quote Link to post

chris 1
Hello Whitser, the best thing to try to "start" your ´terrier in such a case is to try to enter it together with a earthdog that he allready knows, so you are sure they do not get into a fight underground. i know that it is not the best, and normally to avoid to enter two at a time, but in this case maybe it is one good way. i saw a young terrier more than once, that was not really interested in entering, flying through an earth when he entered right behind an older dog that he knew well. first they examined an empty earth together, than an occupied earth, the older dog worked the young seemed to be all the time behind him. the third entering he did by his own, and is now a very reliable dog. does your dog show interest to a fox at all, after you shot it or something? does he have praydrive? best regards chris Quote Link to post
