stroller 341
Just come in from a morning ferreting with my little kelpie x maggie. Its been the first time up on this particular bit of permission this season. there isnt a load of rabbits on it but its worth a walk round as it has some lovely reed beds and the rabbits sit out in them so the dog has a great time hunting up. So the first half of the morning was just spent walking around hunting the reed beds up she had a few good runs but didnt connect she lacks a bit height and bounces about like an antelope great to see and all good fun.We met some free range pigs about half grown and very friendly mags hasnt seen a pig before and wasnt too happy about them running up to get fed.Its a shame they taste so good as they are friendly little things We started ferreting a corner set she had marked it strongly under blackthorn and got a couple out netted one missed one before we moved on walking the hedge about fifty yards ahead of us a big old hare bounces in to the field right in front of maggie. it took off and so did she but as soon as she got behind it and scented it she stopped dead. the hackles went up and she came back to me for reassurance. it was a funny sight and i had to laugh at the thought of her future if she belonged to some lads on here she would have been dropped off in the nearest lay by on the way home We went on the ferret a big old warren on a bank side maggie was almost down the hole!! marking it like this means there are multiple rabbits or a rabbit just under the surface and took 5 out of it 3 of them were back netted bolting out of hidey holes i missed and mags turning them back into the nets she is becoming very useful on a days ferreting. Beautiful morning a bit hard but it was great just to be out with my hare scared dog Quote Link to post

Neal 1,857
Ironically, my three kelpies are the same with foxes; they race after them whenever they see one but once they get close enough it's as though they're saying, "Oh high cousin, sorry, I didn't realize it was you," and trot back. Apart from the time they saw one in the garden, a few years back, the week after some of my chickens had been taken. I think they took it personally that time. Quote Link to post

Moll. 1,770
Great post and pictures, she is a lovely little dog and a handy sort to have by the sound of it. I wonder what made her do that with the hare? My whippet was literally nose to nose with a fox a year or two back, the fox made up his mind the whippy wasn't worth bothering about and calmly trotted away, Boo came bouncing back to me grinning from ear to ear wagging his tail Funny things dogs Quote Link to post
stroller 341
I just think she has never seen a hare before and the only thing she has been allowed to hunt has been rabbits. we live in the sticks and are surrounded by sheep cows horses ducks and chickens so i have to be strict on the dogs steadyness to stock. So being a fairly clever dog she has obviously thought twice about chasing it just in case it bit her or i shouted at her funny enough i have never been interested in hunting hares but i did wonder if she could catch one as i knew there are plenty of hares on that particular bit of permission. I guess now i know Quote Link to post

stroller 341
WR The saluki is doing well, its still got a long way to go but he is getting about fine. i dont know if he will work again but the signs are good. the leg is a mess though there is a lot of tissue missing which makes his leg look deformed Quote Link to post
