New Legistation

Recommended Posts

New legislation has been introduced by the Government which will make it an offence to fail to properly secure airguns in order to prevent them falling into the hands of children.

From 10th February 2011, owners will be liable for a fine of up to £1,000 if they do not take reasonable precautions to stop unauthorised access to their airgun by people under 18.

hi ya lads

well on looking at this it is clear that when you get a air rifle it should be locked up in a gun safe whether you have kids or not just for safety sake all my guns are locked up eveen my son's reg'd ultra is i now have 5 gun boxes as i have the shotties as well

i think to be honest it is only what we all do anyway they are just going through the motions as there is alot of kids getting hold of the guns either breaking into your house or out house or even shed which i saw the other day on a pest control job 2 air rifles sat in a shed no cover 60 to 70mtrs away from the house hummmm anyone could have just got into the garden as it was open and taken them NO LOCK ON THE SHED

so it gets a big thumbs up from me and like i said before it is something we all do anyway

There is a strange anomally here though

The offence is allowing anyone under the age of 18 access to the said gun, But a 14-17 year old can shoot unsupervised on land that they have permission for, but allowing them access to the gun is an offence????

My kids are up and away , but if they were here they would have a letter saying they were allowed to shoot in the house, granting them acces to the guns !!:blink: lol

Nope, have a read through the legislation. It does state that the offence is for 'Unauthorised' access ie. they must not take them without your approval. So you can as per previous legislation carry them to their unsupervised area

on another point.

i dont have kids and live on my own. would locking my door when i go out not be a resnabale percaution. its reasonable enough for the rest of my property and goods.

to me it seams like they have left a very large gray area in this.

Yeh that was my point

If the kids are granted permission to shoot in the house then leaving acces to the guns is not a crime.

If they took them out with them thats different but the point was that allowing them acces to the guns in the house was an offence.

I was half joking ,but it stands up. Allowing access to guns in house = offence

Allow shooting permission inside house, then no offence if guns are not locked away !! Yay! .

 Hi all i have 4 guns in my house and i would say that it is basic common sense to keep them locked up and it don't have to be a expensive gun safe either .I have 3 children aged 13/ 10 /8 years and the two boys shoot with me .The bags are locked with a combiation lock passed through the zippers and a very strong combi lock passed through the handles and locked to a desk leg just a little deterent to stop them trying to get them out for a play . Yes Andy that will be considdered acceptable, especially if you put em out of sight

it all just seams so silly to me,dient think it was very cleaver when i first heard/posted about it and had to go wandering of to B&Q.

but no my guns are on display on the frount room wall, altho because i hold a RFD i do have them all securly locked to the wall.(well they are now after i found out about this)better safe than sorry.

other guns i have ie working on restoring ect are also locked to the wall.now i think about so is the charging bottle.

Andy, If they are securely fastened to the wall, even on display, that would be reasonable precaution strenghtend by the fact you lock your door upon leaving

R.A. My daughter already has my permission to shoot (my airsoft pistol and my other Pistols) in the house as and when she likes

Not that she likes to do it , nor will she ever shoot them  you guy's that have kids that are enthusiastic about shooting are so lucky

they did use to sit in my cubord but when i went to fetch the bits to lock them up, i hade the idea of displaying them, so one redecorated frunt room later, hear we are.

it is nice to be without women some times, because if i was still with the x they wouldent even be in the house let alone nicely displayed.

cheers Tony all the best mate.
