hunting mad 147
Brother phoned me this morning to tell me he,d finished the lure machine and to c if i wanted to take the pup for a couple of runs on it. So 1o'clock met him in a local country park nice big open flat space, my brother brung his bitch and his mate came with his whippet 11 months who ive taken out a couple of times and is showing promise he's had a few rabbits on the lamp. While we set the lure machine up the dogs were loose including my 2 and my fathers bitch all doing a bit of bushing as there plenty of warrens along the banks on the side of the field. So we started running the dogs, maching was working a treat pups enjoying it older dogs not all that interested, then dodo as we call him my brothers mate called me to have a look at his dog the whippet which is his first working dog, the dogs eye had gone squint and he was trying to scratch it so had a look in it and could'nt see anything but it really iratating the dog so we packed up and he took the dog to the vets. About an hour gone by so phoned to see what the vet had said, the dog had an inch long thorn gone right into his eye and dodo and my brother have had to take him straight to Bristol to an eye specialist vet, the local vet told them the dog will probably loose the sight in the eye and could even loose the eye if they cant remove it. Lets hope the specalist can save it. Anyone had any experiance of this and how did it turn out? Quote Link to post

mattyg 1,862
had a seemingly inocuous eye injury on one of mine a few years ago, turns out a twig/grass seed/bit of crap had gone into the eye and came back out again, got refered to a to specialist whos 1st question was "are you insured" when i said yes she explained to me that the initial op would cost upwards of £2000 then all the follow up check ups and meds would make it around £3000...the vet worked miracles and all was well in the end. very complicated op with the whole eye being removed and taken apart and messed about with is the best way i can explain it. hope the dog come good, and i hope you got deep pockets or insurance! good luck, matt! wuyang 513
My long gone whippet got a gorse thorn in his eye, they had to operate to remove, they then put this big white layer of protein (at least thats what i thin they said it was) over his eye. He ended up been fine, the vet said he was very lucky. The vet fees were not too bad. If vets know your insured they know how to charge. My old jack also got a gorse thorn in his eye. The vet gave us some cream or his eye and said hopefully his eye will naturally expel the thorn (this time only a small thorn), anyway his eye did expell the thorn and he was fine. Dont work gorse these days, not worth it. I think its disgusting what vets charge...they know they've got you by the knackers. Quote Link to post
Bosun11 537
It turned out like this mate.. Ain't a pretty sight..!! This poor fecker had a similar incident, blackthorn spike, whilst lamping. The reason it looks so bad is that the big dope had to have the eye out and kept smashing his stitched, itching eye against anything he could and subsiquently burst the stitches.. Then impossible to be re-stiched..! It was then a hell of a long healing process, as the open socket had to heal from the back, outwards. Right, he's been healed for about two years now and, i'm sad to say is pretty much fecked as a lamper. I did carry on lamping him for a while but after a few knocks and then a very serious accident, i knew the job was fecked for him. Thing is, i bred the dog, entered him and knew all to well his capabilitys, so he now just works daytime, not always the best job for a 26.5" half cross bull but he really is a useful animal and i'm sure any dog with more pace will hardly notice a difference daytime. I hope all goes well Quote Link to post
