Saluki Coursing in the Desert

Not so good on the rabbits then?

They are hares not rabbits.

I'd like to see any other type of running dog do better out there.

Just watched it again - I think you are right Meerihunter, They looked like smallish Hares.

I still think one of our 3/4 grews would have mouthed them sooner.

Did you see, I think they actually dug the hare out of a hole and slipped the dogs on it! Let's face it, there's only one way an animal could survive in that heat during the day, and that's underground. The desert hares are very small. I still think its like watching paint dry: nothing against Salukis: they are a superb piece of equipment for the job. Not my cup of tea though: a war of attrition.

that was a good clip just the dogs would be well bate from the heat see this clip i came accross the dogs in it ar well able to move! :D

:clapper: Thats my video lol :D

The black bitch is SalukiXsaluki/lurcher X Beardie/bitza lurcherXLab, the two rough lurchers are BeddieXWhippet/Grey and X BeddieXGrey X BeddieXWhip, the big white and black is full Saluki he is not so sharp on the short runs in and out the post being a big lad. :whistle:

Unfortunately my Saluki bitch was out of action with her litter at the time,I would liked to had her on to show that some saluki's have all the gears too.

Fanntastic to see those salukis coursing like that!

The dessert hare or "erneb" is quite small around 4 - 4 1/2lb in weight.I would have to disagree with the point raised that a tight bred longdog would have mouthed it sooner as a running dog with a large proportion of greyhound would burn out in those conditions,

ive ran in the heat with saluki crosses in the deserts of new mexico and the line bred saluk crosses , run better than the pures by far even tho there a few pures tha can do it ,a lot are not fast enough for a wily jack rabbit ,a qaurter to half is more than enough for any runnin dog ,unless you have plenty of space or lucky enoug to live in wide open spaces had the saluk types for 17 years and saw several run in this country and over by in the usa all the best

I heard that an arab took some top uk bred salukiX's back to desert after seeing them run on the fen's. Word came back that the dog could not catch hare out there whether it was the heat or rough ground or other factors I don't know.

Anyone else know anything of this.

Hi Whin,i have a friend near Baja California in Mexico and he has run what he calls cold blood greyhounds that are line bred Deerhound/greyhound and also Saluki/greyhound longdogs.

He found that any dog that had to much grey was at a disadvantage on long courses to jacks in his conditions as they would burn out and after a season or two would have often gain foot injuries from the terrain.

He now just runs a pair of english import pure salukis and in the heat and other conditions have come into their own and are going to have a more longer "active working life" than to his other and friends hounds;

Regards;

welll ive been going hunting in the desert for several years and the only dogs to catch year after year in new mexico are hybrids or they would all have pure saluks and i know several and hunted with a good few , the good hybrids are stronger and have good feet plus take the heat well enough , but they catch, were saluks but afew catch after watching and videoing hundreds of courses and being at a few contests the onl;y one to win were hybrids a few galgos and a few keen saluk enthusaiasts , there aguy out in new mexico called milt garret a great guy a desendint of the famous law man he keeps top class hybrids but it took him twenty years of breeding and living were the jacks are , a hybrid lurcher is a better all round dog by far , d salmon had alurcher called phoebe saluk staghound hybrid she caught hares up to her seventh year her pups doing the same now and some of her litter brothers , ive saw ahundred saluks pure but i would only take threee or four home ,no more to say realy ,as long as you hunt early morning have your water with you a good saluk hybrid bred right will run thand catch more most of the time
