Pet Ferret

Recommended Posts

Was speaking to a woman earlier today who keeps two ferrets as pets only. They are spoilt rotten and play with her cats etc etc so much so that one of them turns its nose up at meat to which i said to starve it until it does. She asked me if they would work or not? I didn't know what to say? What do you reckon? Can ferrets become so friendly with other animals that they lose the hunting instinct?

theres a big difference between a ferret that works a whole bury and shows knows what its generally doing from instinct flushing the rabbits out from that of a ferret that just lumbers into the bury half paced and happens too bolt a rabbit because of her smell or because a rabbit anticipates the ferret may attack it. basicallly what im saying is that sometimes The ferret may not actually have too stand up to a rabbit and properly bolt it if this is the case then they aren't really working if you get me ...so yes they will bolt rabbits but wont be amazing or really understand the game.. but if you give then time they may turn around its best too get one form a good working line of which you've seen others form the same line work and prove they are grafters..

I like ferrets that bolt rabbits when they're working  Have nt you ever had a rabbit bolt while netting up before the ferrets been put in? I know I have plenty of times Why? because rabbits are preyed upon and flee to survive another day  Out of curiousity can you tell me what you call a working ferret? Please

No i have never had a bolter whilst netting up, If I could get some of them to bolt just by making a noise round the entrance to the set it would make for some good sport for the dog when out mooching! and what I would call a working ferret is one who will go to ground with no hesitation, work the set until all rabbits present are either bolted or on extreme cases kill and have to be dug to

I've had a number of ferrets that had been kept as 'pets'. Some turned out to be good hard workers and others didn't. Ferrets either have it in them or they don't. If they have it in them then they will work if given the opportunity and mollycoddling and playing with cats won't change that.

all my ferrets are pets thats what i started off originally with ferrets, all mine except 2 are rescues which have come from a pet back ground, the 2 exceptions came from a working background and they are now pets and workers, most ferrets will work, I wouldnt take a couple of mine out as one is getting on a bit and one is just a bumbler and very laid back. My mate is the same with his ferrets we both belong to a ferret club, 9 times out of 10 rabbit smells or see,s ferret and thinks bugger this im out here into whatever is waiting.
