Bunny shooting in comfort?

Recommended Posts

My bright brainwave to shoot bunnies in some paddocks, wanted to be out of the wind, rain and dry ish! So thought why not get a beach shelter (£15 from a local supplier) and a Camo net (£25 for a 10 x 10' net), erect shelter then put net over shelter, poke barrels through, as long as down wind of bunnies no scent for them to worry about, put a couple of camping bed roll things in to lay on, should be warm, dry and hidden from bunny sight...

Going to see the landowner this weekend hopefully, so should be on site next week, will keep updating with photos, the wife is looking forward to zeroing in her rabbit gun tomorrow!

Just google earthed the land, good hedgerows along one side that the sun is predominantly behind, so not only will we be less obvious but the sun will also be behind us! If we set up next to the hedge we are going to be a lot less obvious to the bunnies... Also that is the side that is closer to the road so the general road noise will help mask our twangs... We are still over 100 feet from the road all the way round too!

Something I did check out, the road is behind the hedge and we would be firing away from the road, the hedge marks the boundary of her land so we would not fire into neighbours fields. Like I said hopefully going for a recce Sat or Sun, zeroing new sights in tomorrow (and leading the new gun he he he), got every thing ready, missus got a complete bunny bagging outfit for £230, including 2 scopes (I got one as an upgrade), 2 tins of pellets, game bag and rifle rest bag things. So off to Sinclairs to zero those scopes and then we are ready to stop that bun!

Thanks Shay, the missus googled the camo pop up tent and has one on order at Argos, getting it tomorrow, I wanted the cow print one, it was cheaper, sigh, but she insisted on the camo as the was no way she was crawling into a cow, so there goes a tin of pellets worth of money... Camo pop up tent getting tomorrow, will have a door for added warmth and behaving like rabbits if the rabbits ain't behaving....

OK, have got the shooting set up complete and will explain all about it. The land I have got permission on has drainage ditches on 3 sides, with the house on the fourth edge. The cotton tailed hooligans have made their burrows in the side of the drainage ditches and then invades the paddocks (they keep horses, they had to have one destroyed last year after something spooked it and it bolted and shoved a leg down the a scrape or a burrow). The have been coming up to the house as well and tunnelling under the trees in the garden. They are used to human company, however if you raise a stick or a gun, whammo off like Linford Christie, that is why we have gone for the lay down and plug them approach.

Shelter: Camo pop up tent, as suggested by Shay, trial experiments with it so far prove it is damned fast to set up but a bit of a bu99er to get back in the bag, repeated experiments have meant that contributions to the swearbox which were exceeding the cost of the Gelert tent at one point are now down to a McDonalds meal! £24.99 Argos, they have a limited number of these pop up tents left, grab them while you can, many many thanks Shay!

Camo Net: Ideal for hanging off branches of hedge to extend over tent to really break outline, 15 x 15', with a hanging rope (?) along one side to tie to branches of hedge £25.

Comfort: Foam bedrolls for camping £9 each.

Rifle Rests: Caldwell Deadshot shooting bags, £21.50 each, makes a nice rifle rest!

Flask: Steel thermos, had one anyway!

Game bag: under camo net outside tent!

How we plan to attack, get down about 3 hours before sun set, pitch under hedge, so we can shoot along field where bunny comes out and under edge fences. Tent up, net down, rifle loaded and pointed along field edge, ready for bunny, coffee poured and biccies ready.

Brad, if you can position yourself in a similar way in the wood on your permission, you might be able to do the same, the tents are Gelert Instant Tents from Agros, cow pattern is under £18, camo is £24.99, try finding a camo prone shooting position shelter for under £25, with sewn in groundsheet too! As soon as it is out of the bag, shake and up it goes! Stake down a couple of guy lines and job done! Would think that we could pitch up, pour and get comfy in under 10 minutes!
