paulus 26
Funny how SS keeps coming up,I have never met Mike brown or spoken to him,I suppose there will be lads on here that know him, what I have heard is that SS mainly ran on the lamp, now I don't know if that is true, so don't quote me, as he was born on August 1991 that was 20 years ago so maybe someone saw him work, or perhaps mike is a lone hunter I do not know, There are stud dogs out there with no SS breeding or very little. dont how sooty sam ran but i had a blue bitch he sired back in1994 mistral (fast lady of meliden) she took hare and rabbits well. she was an exellent ferreting dog, the only dog ive owned that would crown a laid up ferret. she also went in on the odd fox. all in all a very game little bitch. Ideation 8,216
A few people on here have said that he is not very helpful on the phone but more than happy to talk when your face to face with a fist full of dollars I and many others have had good, long, informative convos with him. He knows whippets and certainly his whippets very very well. He does not suffer fools gladly, and many of those who have said that they rang him and didnt get much chat are those who slag him off on here - wonder what their attitude was like on the phone? Sooty sam is dead. What he did or didn't do. . . . thats for mike and a few others to know and the rest to speculate about! And yes ss was mainly lamped. Now to the original question - i would expect ANY well built, well brought on 'working type' whippet to be able to handle a rabbit/hare/fox/small deer (roe/munty) single handed. It wouldnt be first choice of dog for doing the latter quarry, but if you like Whips and they suit you then there is nothing to stop you doing the bigger stuff with them fairly regular. jarv5116 57
Id love to see one of these whippets on a fox single handed I think whippet would really struggle on fox on its own. Im not saying all whippets would jibb. just think whippet would struggle killing big foxes. Quote Link to post
fresh earth 47
I have owned 3 or 4 that have went into charlie in the past i wouldnt and never have run them on fox simply because they will and do get smashed a bit in the proses and i wouldnt want my prize ferreting companion lay up for the sake of a stinking carcus of no use to me. Youd be surprised but every whippet iv owned has been gaging to be slipped on every charlie iv seen on the beem thats why i never work mine from heal no more always on a slip. a decent sized whippet takes less stick but realisticly how do you expect a 20lb whippet to slay a charlie sometimes 1 and a half times its weight without getting stick ? I owned 1 who was extreme but she was a fluke i think i was only about 13 when she was entered and always worked from heal remembering this was pre ban she took bloody everything from feather to fox roe hare no bother she took a bit stick now and then but tackled whatever i put infront of her she regularly took duck and even had a few geese of the feilds local to me but in reality i was a 13 year old clueless boy now i wouldnt risk my pride and joy for the sake of an adrenaline rush as thats all anyone owning a whippet will get from running a fox as if that was the intended quarry id buy a bullx and did do pre ban. 1 Quote Link to post
