yapping on the lamp

Recommended Posts

as a general prefer lamping on my own but one of the lads asked to go out so i said ok he has a whippet x hound lovely looking bitch both parents great workers indeed. now id never seen this dog work and the lad assured me she was good on the lamp so i brought out my lad (now only dog) and we hit the fields he let me have first 3 slips as he wanted to see my lad work ( heard good things bout him ) 2 out of three then the next slip his bitch mine standing to heel of leash dog straight lined it for the coney then turned it and on the second turn it started yapping to my horror so we but her back in the jeep and continued just wit my lad have any of you guys had a yapping dog and if so have you got it to stop yapping ???? the lad was appearing quite distraught as he paid big money for the pup and reared her from 8 weeks now she is over a year any help much appreciated

sounds like the bitch has been entered to early to me mate and thats a hard thing to stop them doing thay do it when thay have been entered to early becouse there not fast enough or developed enough to get on terms with the prey and let out a yap in frustration but once thay start doing it its very very hard to stop them atb

would an anti bark collar work in a situation like this? may nock the dog off a few runs but it may learn that if it keeps its mouth shut it can keep going.

then again, it may wreck the dog all together.

just a question lads (and lasses).

the dog wud think its doin something wrong by chasing the rabbit n wud ruin the dog altogether..

Just give her easy runs, its jst a confidence thing!

one of my collie greyhounds used to yap when on rabbits tried alsorts to stop it but stopped using dog for rabbits and put it on fox [preban] :whistling: it stopped instantly mate but would still yap on bunnies if he found one when out bushing i have to agree with a previous comment usually its down to entering the dog to early its a confidence thing mate [frustration makes a dog yap] imo

Because the dog is a pack hunter yapping is just the dog trying to communicate with other members of the pack to give it some help...call it frustration if you like but that's where it comes from. Breeding has done alot to eradicate it from dogs that hunt in a solitary way but you're up against what is a very natural instinct.

What type of hound x is it? Some hounds are meant to yap.

1st cross collie greyhounds are supposed to be the most likely cross to bark so i was led to believe i think its got something to do with them not being the fastest of dogs i may me wrong tho thats why i used to hang back as long as i could with my dogs
