Guest HAWKEYE
I was cleaning out my kennels last nite and I noticed a damp patch in the corner on the floor. Its just a flat mdf board raised up off the concrete on a metal 8 frame. but seened to be swollen with rain, i will be doing my yearly painting of the outside and realignment of the metal flashing on the corners so any leaks should be prevented soon. But is there anything I can apply to the flooring to prevent the damp? eg ronseal or the like? Someone sugguested bitumine paint? has anyone used this? I also need to clean the concrete due to some stains from rust on my run mesh, what will get rid of this
shaun v 3
if its raised up off the concrete i dont think its the floor , i would check the roof for leaks or keep an eye on the dogs incase they are pissing on the floor, when i used to have my old wooden kennels i used to put rubber matting on the floor incase they did take a leak and they are easy to clean, as for cleaning the concrete get some patio cleaner from a diy centre. Wilky 0
Whether the floor is wooden or concrete or flags I have always given my kennels and my terrier boxes come to that, two good coats of concrete paint, this stops the lime from coming away from the concrete surface causing dust, it stops damp from coming through concrete and flags and it seals timber so you can hose everything down without causing water damage, I also paint two feet up the walls so the dogs slashing against it doesn't harm the timber, but I agree if the bed is raised off the floor and is damp, it's highly likely to be the roof or a leaking window case. As for the kennel roofs I cover mine with a fish pond liner, it's all done in one, without a joint and if you get a good one they are guaranteed for twenty years when they are full of water so will last forever on a roof and are UVA treated so the sun won't perish them. Hope this helps.

Guest HAWKEYE
Pond liner goood idea but my roof seems sound, May well be a leak in a joint But what do u use to keep it all traeated and clean? What abouts Jeyes FLUID? and where can I get it?
Tarmac 1
just replace the MDF board, its the worst possible sheet material for wet areas etc, replace it with marine ply or something along the lines.
Wilky 0
The pond liner won't rip if you get the right stuff, I get mine from Bradshaws in York, they do mail order and it's definately cheaper than corrugated sheets. As for Jeyes fluid you can get it at most equine shops, but it has to be perfectly dry before you put the dogs back in. And just on the off chance, if your kennels are timber and you ever have a problem with fleas etc. Duramitex is excellent for spraying the timberwork, it's supposed to be for pigeon lofts, but most greyhound breeders/racers use it with no ill effects, I know a well known greyhound breeder who dips his dogs in a mild solution since Allugan was taken off the shelves. I also need to clean the concrete due to some stains from rust on my run mesh, what will get rid of this <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The use of mdf for external work is a no no. I am afraid that once the mdf is exposed to the outdoor elements, all the resins, adhesives will brake down turning the the area into a soft expanded patch. With no strength. Under no curcumstances should timber be allowed direct contact with concrete. The reason for this is that timber is a porous material and will soak up moisture like a sponge.eventually deterioating. Being in the timber constuction industry with many years of experience under my belt. My ideal method in contruction of a timber kennel on to concrete leveled slab is. The bearers should be set at 400c/c with a perimeter surround. All timber bearers should have 3 coats of a liquid bitumen, including end grain. All bearers should be laid on a damp proof membrane (Dpc). The flooring should be 25mm (w.b.p) external plywood. The exposed (underneath) of the flooring should also be coated with a liquid bitumen. When you have erected the kennel walls/roof. I would cover the floor with a pva unibond. And then tile the floor space or use a vinyl floor covering which is well stuck down along the edges. This is the method I have used in my kennels which have a 14'x8 floor space. At least the kennel walls may rot but my floor will survive years of weather. R>R

Guest trev
Not anymore, all the ingredients have been taken out.Shite stuff now. Why not play some boys from the blue brigade rebel songs in the kennell, this will eliminate the problem, the dogs wont sleep in the damp kennell they will sleep outside. :11: :11: :11: :11: :11: :11:
