what a week end!!

Hi every one

Well what a week end!!

It started with an invite to west down camp!

To meet up with si again, and take out some bunny’s. I had asked me to be at the gates by 22:00hrs but I got there early; can’t stand staying in when there is time to go shooting!!

I met si at the gate as agreed, and picked him up and drove up to the accommodation. it was still a little early to go out as the squaddies were still getting ready to deploy.

So we had a good ole chat about air gunning and a bitch about regulars on here!! LOL

After watching a exclusive of the latest editions to si’s DVD it was time to get ready!

And shortly after we were out to check zero! @ 25yds oopps!! Sorry meters a few clicks later and we were both on zero!

And then a final check on some blue (what looked like tooth paste tops) which were no bigger than my thumb, THWACK! THWACK!! And both of them were hit!

Si’s air rifle

Si was well pleased with the Falcon Accuracy pellets impact!! And is using them for now!!

We had a look around the camp showing me the hot spots, we were out for a while when the first target presented its self, which si said “go ahead Davy, take it out!†I could see its silhouette against all the lights that are on around the camp. And the stalk was on!

I see I had to go around some bushes, so I kept in the shade and moved slowly and reached a good advantage point, so down on one knee .i had another look through the trees it was still there!. And I got down in a prone position, no bi pod DOH!! As I thought I may need it after ranging it at 44yds.i watched it for a while as my breathing steadied then took the shot I didn’t use the lamp, as I could see its silhouette. I turned my illuminated ret on and placed it on the kill zone! Steady breathing first stage exhale THWACK! Over it went!! Not a twitch I was well happy, Si also congratulated me on the shot.

We continued on around till we passed a si’s accommodation and went in to warm up (easy bill) and take a break, after another good chat and a quick drink. We was back out on vermin patrol, this went on for a few hours. 3 tours and three quarries, this place has a bunny problem, and si has a problem with lights in some areas but he still gets good bags. Just goes to show what a good hunter he is!!

I also know this as one of my permissions is a business park with loads of lights, so shadows are the places I frequent!!

And here is my bag

Any ways I left si at about 05:30hrs and set of home, and when I woke up in the afternoon I thought we might as well invite him over to the HFT course. But he had no transport, so I got to thinking well Andy is not far from him. a few phone calls later and it was set Andy was picking up si, and bringing him over.

I had arranged to go there with chaz, andyz, Andy, Paul, steve.and thought it would be rude not too invite him over.

And here are some pics of the course and its contenders

A quick zero check!

Every one had a good time and banter, and si got a bit dirty lol.

After this Si had mentioned he needed more rat footage for his fourth DVD, so I arranged to meet up with him and Andy and take a look at the dairy and Ratsville.

We had a good couple of hours out and si got what he came for loads of footage and enjoyed it as well

Here are some pics

Wow now that's what I call a shooting weekend. And it's only January -ish! Looks a brilliant time for everyone Davy. I've never shot an HFT course let alone entered an HFT Competition before; always been a hunter. Is there a class for .22 recoiling springer or is it take on all comers as equipped? Everyone involved in this sport seems to be using .177 PCP.

You should try it lads its great, was only my second time so just set myself a target to improve on my last score and betterd it by 4 :)

It shows me I have improved a bit over the last 4 months or so, I also find its a comfidence boost when in the field, you find yourself talking to your gun saying "come on we have made this shot in practace" you kno where im coming from simon lol

With the prosport mate your halfway there bud......craking rifle and betters neally every spring rifle out there except my TX lol :whistling:

Yeh mate im more than impressed with its performance. Only thing is, you have to touch the peg in hft with any part of your body, so its not as if you can rest a springer against it like you would with a PCP, cant touch it with your elbow because then your trigger finger is infront of the peg, so im trying to find a solution on how to touch the peg without affecting the POI of the shot.

TX is a great gun too, had one in .22 for a while. If I ever get another springer I think it will be a TX in .177

Brilliant write up Davy bud.

I can’t see the photos yet as my work PC bans photos for some strange reason, but I will look when I come off nights in the morning buddy.

It was a great weekend buddy and thanks again to you and Andy (top blokes).

Hi Simon,

Yes you can get a .22 spring class so I am lead to believe buddy.

You should try it, its real good fun mate.

There were lots of lads there with springers too. You will still do well with a springer as none of the targets require you to rest on the top of a peg. You can rest the springer on your hand next to the side of the peg like I did and the lads with our PCPs.

A .177 springer would be ideal as you are not allowed to know the range to the targets before you shoot them, which makes it a real bummer for .22 shooters unless you are really good at range finding using your eyes.

The targets are placed in a way that the lane gives you a real false sense of distance and one target I missed completely over the top, not even getting 1 point thinking that it was 50 metres when it was only 39 metres. It looked really far though due to the narrow lane and trees hiding it. (bloody magpie).

Thanks for this info Si.

Well this is encouraging! My only .177 rifle is my TX200HC but it's on FAC and thus will not be allowed I believe. I quite fancy getting a another TX200 .177 or Weihrauch HW77 in .177 expressly for competition shooting, but, I'll have a go at a course with .22 HW77 and my 30-30 ret. See what my old grey matter tells me to hold over/under at! I can see how you can be thrown off the correct range estimation with the forced perspectives the lane will throw at you. I must go deeper into this.

Thank you again Si mate:thumbs:
