when running your dogs, day or night do you run with or with out a collar and is there a reason for the way you run em ????

with, only reason being if i need to get hands on control of the dog for what ever reason also it may offer a bit of protection, did get a snag up on a barbed wire fence once years ago but nothing serious should of taught that particular dog to jump :D

I used to run with collar on, many years ago, but having seen a dog, not one of mine, nigh on strangle itself hanging off a fence, extensive muscle damage to neck as a result of its struggles, I haven't run my dogs with collars on for many years. There's always the scruff to grab hold of in an emergency and as my dogs sometimes work thick cover littered with old barbed wire fences and broken branches I reckon they are safer with nothing to snag on.

A friend of mine used to use his foxing lurcher with a strap hanging off the collar for the fox to grab hold of instead of the dog: worked a treat. Tried it on one of mine: she freaked when she realised foxy had hold of the collar, and wouldn't touch them again unless she wasn't wearing a collar. Took her a few sessions to get over it.

Also, can't say for certain what happened as it happened in thick cover, but I reckon a muntie male got one of his horns wedged under a collar as well: dog yelled blue murder but when I got there the collar was twisted out of shape: dog had a big graze on its neck just under the collar: if the dog hadn't been wearing a collar it might have got out of the way quicker OR if might have been more badly injured: who knows! I guess there's pros and cons about wearing collars.

I totally understand what skycat is saying but personally i always leave collars on, i like to be able to control the dog with it if the situation arises and as i often take two dogs lamping i use slips to ensure each dog can have its run........
