sowhat 1,572
I tend to agree with you, Chalky; but the non-ped grews in the old days were much more "lurcher" bred, and were expected to be "multi functional"; race, course and do a bit ferreting. I still go to the Whippet racing, been there today, but the modern non-ped is bred for out and out speed, and with a few exceptions, would not stand up to a days coursing or a nights lamping. Nothing wrong with that; I'm amazed at the times they do over 150 yds, I even bought a stopwatch to time them myself, as I couldn't believe how faster they were than in my day !! Cheers. Totally agree their different to the dogs i saw in the late 70s then again most of them were the result of ped whippets bred to greyhounds and still retained the peds stamina.atb dell Poach, that dogs pic with the roe I put up; that was in the late 60's and his litter varied from an 18lb bitch to a 50lb bitch !! He was around 36/40lb but looked like a perfect Whippet. He wasn't the fastest around, but on the day he got faster after every 150 yd race ! We used to walk to the tracks , over the many slagheaps that blotted the landscape then, and would course a hare before we got to the track, and then course one on the way back to the pub after the racing ! Nowadays the non-peds are wrapped in cotton wool, they won't race on a saturday if there is an Open on the sunday !! I'm glad the non-ped Whipet racing is still going, as they make a great outcross for a Lurcher ! Cheers. Not all non-peds are wrapped in cotton wool, one of ours chased and caught a rabbit next to the track up at Kirkcaldy just before the heats of the Scottish Derby scratch racing, and on the thursday the week before, she had 3 rabbits over at Loch Leven ps forgot to say, the same bitch went on to win the 40lb final, 2 years on the trot Quote Link to post

Do you still have her? Sadly she passed away last year, and so did her mother who was 15 yrs old, thanks for the nice comments This was her mother when she was about 11 yrs old, she loved swimming and bril at retrieving, one of my party tricks was to put a egg on the kitchen floor and send her from the living room to retrieve it with out breaking it Quote Link to post
