Phil Lloyd 10,738
And the one I choose will hopefully have a Head like a snake, neck like a drake, back like a beam, tail like a rat, and feet like a cat hi, whats the stamina like on these dogs and temperment Temperament is usually first class,..these canine athletes have to fit in, and perform in front of an eager crowd of racing enthusiasts,..and on a warm Summer's day, the whippet fraternity, don't hold back Not much use in the racing game for dogs that cannot handle the stress, and noise of a day's racing. However,..I do not think these 'specialist bred' jukels can be compared to a purpose bred LURCHER... But, I may well be wrong... Quote Link to post
chartpolski 24,139
I tend to agree with you, Chalky; but the non-ped grews in the old days were much more "lurcher" bred, and were expected to be "multi functional"; race, course and do a bit ferreting. I still go to the Whippet racing, been there today, but the modern non-ped is bred for out and out speed, and with a few exceptions, would not stand up to a days coursing or a nights lamping. Nothing wrong with that; I'm amazed at the times they do over 150 yds, I even bought a stopwatch to time them myself, as I couldn't believe how faster they were than in my day !! Cheers. 1 Quote Link to post

Totally agree their different to the dogs i saw in the late 70s then again most of them were the result of ped whippets bred to greyhounds and still retained the peds stamina.atb dell Quote Link to post

He was around 36/40lb but looked like a perfect Whippet. He wasn't the fastest around, but on the day he got faster after every 150 yd race ! We used to walk to the tracks , over the many slagheaps that blotted the landscape then, and would course a hare before we got to the track, and then course one on the way back to the pub after the racing ! Nowadays the non-peds are wrapped in cotton wool, they won't race on a saturday if there is an Open on the sunday !! I'm glad the non-ped Whipet racing is still going, as they make a great outcross for a Lurcher ! Cheers. Quote Link to post
