It depends where the fish is caught from and how much effort / dedication went into locating and catching it. Certainly imho a Northern 20 from Wyreside is nowhere near as special as a Southern 30 from the Thames or Grand Union canal.

northen southen any 20 of thirty good but getting to dear these days is carp fishing ,cost a fortune to get a pic and put it back still got all me gear but ant doing as much bait tickets tackel bit to pricey

Theres a lot of waters tenner a rod near per 24 hrs (typin it it doesnt sound that cheap! haha) and you can pick up baits cheap off ebay etc. But, get the gear to roll your own boilies and you can save a lot as long as you dont start buying magical, expensive additives etc. I find the biggest expense for me these days is leads. I always fish with a lead release clip so whenever i hook a decent fish the resistance opens the clip and the lead drops off. Again though, you can make your own and thats something im going to be looking into this year. Carp fishing can still be done on the cheap, and you'll still have as much fun as the guy with the grands worth of gear on the bank. Thats err, me by the way. BUT, we didnt buy it all at once. I have added to that piece by piece over the years. Im by no means rich!

Club waters for me offer by far the best value often for the cost of 24-48 hour ticket on a named water you can fish for the whole season, have a choice of waters and fish for other species if the carp aren't playing ball. I am lucky round here that I have two currently free lakes with carp to mid 20's and free canal stretches that holds em up to high 20's perhaps even 30's. As for bait it can be as cheap or expensive as you like from a tin of value sweetcorn / luncheon meat or a cheap loaf of bread, worms, pint of maggots, seeds and particles all the way up to the latest 'must have, all singing and dancing' boilies costing a tenner a kilo.

The biggest feature on most waters I fish is the margins, a bit of watercraft / stealth and keep well hidden and the big uns might come moseyin round where your pod / rods would be silhouetted over the water. You don't need fancy tackle or the latest gizmo to fish close in. Or even try float fishing, yes you will get some funny looks settin up thowd float gear in order to earn more puzzled looks I floatfish with a mitchell 300 and a Simpsons of Turnford glass rod. Once I have winkled out a few fish on worm / bread one of the bivvy boys might come over for a look see, especially if everyone else is blanking. If I am in a good mood I might even show him how to plumb the depth, float fish and set up a float. On a good day I might even give em a float, rubbers, shot and some bait and get em on their way after explaining that my reel doesn't have a hidden / secret baitrunner button / lever on it.

A man who knows what he is talking about!!...good reply PO.

Lets take bait for a minute, and my advice would be "Dont Belive The Hype!!".....try and think of bait as nothing more than something carp will eat, put it in a place they will eat it and in a quantity that will keep them there (or just get you a bite) whichever fits what your doing at the time.....theres loads of things out there that fit the bill and none more deadly than good ol sweetcorn or worms.

These £10 a kilo baits are much too expensive for 99% of anglers to use correctly anyway.....you fish a water with a high head of 20 lb + fish and you cant afford to put enough in to make them really effective, you will only ever get the passing chance which you could do with any bait.

Its all clever advertising and nothing more, a well known carp angler on a syndicate lake I used to fish would get given 500 kilos by the bait company that he was sponsered by and hand it all out to us for free to pile in....what do you think all the carp got caught on?

The only reason was, thats what everyone used and he was in a magazine every week blabbing off how thats what was working....nothing more.

Each fish has its merits, but only the captor will know what they are because he will know where and what type of water they came from.

Your right about the advertising! I know of a well known carp angler who is in a few of the monthlys who caught a brace of good 30's at the lakes I used to work at, on either corn or plastic corn (which is a well proven way to go on that lake). In the write up for the mag feature he was doing they were both magically caught on the new bait his sponsers were releasing :whistling:

Most of its just bollocks and just comes down to marketing!
