Pure breed

Recommended Posts

Looking around at the Patterdale game, I see they register Patterdales in the States, and maybe also in other country's?. As I understand they do not register crosbreeds at the moment anymore if I understood right?!

Who is kidding who? One thing is for certain, the best workingdogs will probably never be registered. Why? Simply because a lot of people do not care about the paperwork. The dogs must be able to do their job, and that paper is not telling you it can, it can be a indication, but on the end it is still paper.

What if somebody thinks he needs a outcross? He will do it no matter what somebody else is saying, the job is most important.

Then we have somebody who is actually registering his dogs, he likes that crosbred dog because it has something that he needs in his line.......He will use that dog and say to the registering office another dog is the dad....... Have been around some registered workingbreeds, and I can say this is common practice!

So on the end none of the peds are correct, and you have created a dividing factor between the real workingdogs and their registered newest model, not to say flavour of the month.

You can register dogs, but at least you should be prepared to have a OPEN registration, also for crossbreeds or dogs that have strange blood, only thing is that you have to mark where that strange blood came in on the pedigree, so that people who don't like/want that can avoid it. Simply, just like on your written pedigree!.And you have to KEEP the register open for all dogs that never where registered by their breeder. Thinking about that........ registration for a workingbreed is not really helpfull I guess.

Would we not be better calling working terriers working types rather than working breeds ? with all the crosses in them how can they be called a breed ? :hmm:

I think that would be better yes, but many may disagree.

Some think that a DNA test can be the solution to solve this problem of pedigrees not being true, but I can think of a lot of solutions to beat that tool.

Real good point there Nick "what will it do for the breed" i have always been led to believe that an out cross was needed every so often to invigorate the blood, how can that happen in a closed breed

well i think just lines they had for dacades but they got mixed some were in past to start them of so now they classed as pure bred because been put bk in to each over over the years correct me if im

As for inheritence, would you believe that I read somewhere on the Internet that ALL terrier breeds must come from 1

single ancestor. Why?

Because there is a change in genes which is only prevalent in terrier breeds. This goes for all the messed up show breeds as well as the workers.

In the time of the Romans (before the year 0) the terrier was already mentioned as a special British breed, existing then for underground work, being described as small and utterly courageous (willing to tackle anything.)

So the whole terrier phenomenon is in fact genetically, one breed, having developed afterwards in so many different directions.

And further, what does it matter. For us, it matters that we have sufficiant working bloodlines to choose from, for as people on this thread already say, you need the odd outcross now and then and you need something of quality to outcross to. With kennel club paper dogs, this is not possible. And then you're up for the dead end. Especially because all the folks around you, only (in)breed for looks, not for work.

You may just as well have foxterriers, for the Parson Russell of today is only a repetition of the whole foxterrier story a century earlier. And before that, the terriers were coloured and not white, white was bred into them first to fit in fashionably with the hounds, by crossing to beagles to get back lost nose quality, and a bit later, crossing in bull blood to get back lost courage. To get the long nose, many say that Collie were also bred into the foxterrier and sure why not? They didn't have to work to prove if they could, by then, and a collie after all is also a driving dog like a terrier underground.

There was a fairy tale about a little wooden doll which became a boy called Pinokkio, every time he lied his nose got long.....ha ha ha some fairy tales are true.
