Curly Coated Retrievers

Just wondering how many people out there have any experience with this breed. Ive seen them at shows, and seen a pair at a gamefair a while back and they seem lovely dogs. There are some advertised in Lincoln and im thinking of taking one on, already have a Vizsla was going to opt for another but hey, varieties the spice of life.

i saw a couple in a display at coniston show, the looked very useful, much bigger than a lab which surprised me.

without that last pic, i would have said the dog looked overweight maybe just the photo. i wouldn't get one unless the parents are good workers, as the breed has been heavily influenced by show stock shite. it would be great to see someone work these amazing dogs again

plenty of working curly coats still in nz, bit more agro and bigger than a lab, very good water dogs.

Well I never, I was running in the local forest this morning and came across two of these dogs. I thought at first they were Irish Water Spaniels, but the owner told me the breed, can't remember it now, but I'll look it up, or you could google it.

The pair in question where really well behaved and friendly, considering this was in the middle of nowhere and there I was running straight onto them .

I bet they would make a brilliant working dog especially if there was any water involved.............Al

from what i remember, these dogs work a lot up in West Cumbria [the ones in the pics] the woman gave a little talk about them, the breed itself was a favourite amongst old gamekeepers, where its size came in handy for seeing off the odd poacher, quite an old breed. they fell out of favour and were replace by flatcoats who in their turn lost out to labs.
